Air Conditioners
Has anybody had or ask about adding a second unit at the factory. Do they sell a/c units for installion or is this order only for new builds? Thanks in advance Buckeye Mike
Also,is a 13.5 large enough or go with a 15,ooo unit?

Mike we have had to add the 2nd A/C in the bedroom on two other 5th wheels. The install was done by Camping World and they worked fine never had a issue... Most 5th wheels are wired for the 2nd A/C, very easy install... Its my opinion that no 5th wheel over 34' that one A/C will cool in the South. If you stay in the North its possible one A/C would work on small RV's. We have been in 100 degree + temps many days this past summer. And even though our 5th wheel has 3 1/4" walls the most in the industry, and two A/C's were needed. Happy Trails....

Had yours added before we brought it home. Iam glad that we had it done. When we are in the lower part of the unit we run the unit in the bedroom and the other way at night. This keps the noise down. We have the regular size unit not the low profile. Jim

I doubt that you would be able to purchase one from the factory and if so could probably get it for less $$ elsewhere (in my opinion).
We added ours last month. Puchased at Camping World and installed it ourselves.
Our 5er was already pre-wired for the bedroom air, most Montana's are. Check on the ceiling of the bedroom for a electrical box cover and it will have a sticker on it saying something about the a/c wiring. Remove this cover and the wiring is right there ready to use.

You have the option to have a second A/C installed at the factory when you order a new Montana. Many here have done that.

It would be much cheaper to add it when you are ordering. Our 2nd AC will only be $465 to add at the time of build. The 13.5 should be fine as it is usually in the bedroom so its cooling a smaller area than the 15k main unit.

I'm thinking of adding the second a/c. Is the second unit also part of the ducting or just the bedroom area? It does work from the thermostat or is it better to control from the bedroom?

ArtR51,
We installed a Dometic Penguin 13,500 BTU and it is not hooked into the ducting system or the thermostat. The controls for the unit are on the inside mounting panel in the bedroom.
For the OP: I was assuming in my respose you already have a Montana and just wanted to add an additional a/c. As the previous responses said it is cheaper to add one when you order prior to it being built but would be a moot point if your rig is already sitting in your driveway.

We ordered our 2011 3580RL Big Sky with only one AC unit in the living room. After a couple of 100+ deg California days we added the 2nd unit to the bedroom. The trailer was already setup for a second unit and the unit is connected to the same duct and thermostat as the 1st unit. The thermostat that came in the trailer is a double unit, you can run both at the same time or just one unit. You can set the thermostat so each unit is on its own temp setting and will operate on its own. Each unit has a bypass on the unit to push the air to the duct or push the air in to the room it is in. It is much cheaper to have the 2nd unit put in on the factory order than to add it later.

I just added a Dometic BriskAire 15k to the bedroom of my 3000RK. The one unit is just not enough for midwest summers. It was around $900 from Tweetys. Installation took two of us about 2.5 hours. Much of this time was spent getting the caulking from the roof vent off the rubber roofing. Very easy job as the instructions are well written and easy to follow. I elected to go with the 15,000 following the advice of many on this forum regarding if one unit ever goes out a 13.5 won't handle cooling the unit. I did not duct the unit but dump it straight into the bedroom. I did not go with the low profile as height was not an issue. Hooked to the truck with the new unit on the front I measure 12' 11.75".
Over 100 degrees the day we left on this trip. The two units took about 1 hour to cool the rig to where it was comfortable. Very happy with our decision. Jim
