3400RL Weigh In

We were fully loaded yesterday, including water, gear, propane. We hit a CAT scale combined, then truck only.

Pleasantly surprised, we had 11,300 lbs on the axles and 2,540 lbs on the pin. I was originally concerned due to all the options including gel coat, front AC, generator, W/D, ice maker, tools, list goes on. Even if our rig had the 6,000 lbs axles we would have been fine and I would still be a happy clam.

Thanks for supporting an earlier statement that I made on another thread. It is beyond me (other's may be different) of where I can possibly come up with a ton of stuff to haul around in our 3400. We have the 6000# axles by the way, and don't haul water and don't have a generator (yet - Santa is going to bring it and the 2nd AC). I believe we are well within all weight patrol parameters, but like you, one of these days I will get curious and get weighed.

Nice to hear the real numbers from a real person with a real rig. We have pretty much the same on board except the W/D and that will be coming soon. Thanks for sharing!

The numbers seem to add up in a hurry. We are not particularly careful. We want to be comfortable. This is our home. So long as we're not over the axle rating nor the pinbox rating, then I'm happy. We do not have a generator. We do have highgloss. And we do have a w/d stack. And we do carry 2/3 tank of fresh water. Last weighing at a cat scale was last September.

This 3400RL weighs 14,620. 11,760 on the axles (6k axles) and 2,860 on the pin.

My weigh-date is this Saturday. RVSEF is here at the Low conference in Moscow, ID and will be weighing a bunch of us. They use individual wheel scales and can do it all. Then they give you a computerized printout of ALL your numbers and even tell you what your tire pressure should be based on your weight calculations. This will be very interesting for me as I did not have a chance to weigh the rig before I left Alaska.

Check them out at http://www.rvsafety.org/weighing.htm.

I weighed our 3400 on a CAT scale on my way back from Hawthorne a couple of weeks ago: a little light on the food, a full tank of water, and not as many toys as we normally carry (I was baching it at a fire conference).

Trailer axle - 11460 lb
Pin - 2460 lb

Truck steer axle (loaded) - 9140 lb
Truck drive axle (loaded) - 9660 lb
GAWR (steer) - 12,000 lb
GAWR (drive) - 19,000 lb
GCWR - 80,000 lb (more or less)

(Sorry, I don't get to throw those numbers around very often.)

You might want to consider leaving the shih tzu's at home to free up some more weight

Sometimes it's hard to decide what to leave behind...food, water, toys, but never dogs or DW.

I am in the same boat as Steve we have everything including Dual Pane windows and came in at 11700. We hauled a bunch of stuff back to storage that we decided we could do without and I am now not concerned about our weights at all. Especially when we change out one of our recliners for our nice leather one from the house. That in itself was half the weight of the other. All that with carrying around 1/3 tank of fresh water for a shower and toilet use on the road. As fulltimers and carrying an extra kitchen sink so to speak I am very happy with our numbers.

Well, as I suspected, I am overweight, so is my rig. Had my weigh in today and have some major decisions to make in the weeks to come. Here are the numbers:

Truck:

Front axle weights: Unloaded (no trailer that is)

Left: 2200 Right: 2200 Total 4400

Rear:

Left: 1625 Right: 1500 Total 3125

Total Axle load 7525 (GVW)

LOADED:
Front: 4450
Rear: 6350

Total: 10,800 GVWR: 9200 OOPS

Trailer:

Axle Load

Front: 5950
Rear: 5850

Total 11,800

Pin Weight: 3275

Total trailer weight: 15,075 GVWR: 13,975 OOPS

GCW: 22,600 GCWR: 22,000

As can be seen, I do not have enough truck (Thanks to Greg Simmons of Simmons RV, Anchorage, AK for assuring me I had) Also for assuring me I could not carry enough weight to make my trailer overweight. Originally telling me I had 2000 lbs of payload in trailer, when in actuality it is only 1517.

So My question is If I change out the axles to 7000 pounders will Keystone reissue a new data plate with increased weight allowance AND does anyone have a one ton dually for sale?????? Presently in Pendleton, Oregon and will be at the Rally in Redmond later this week.......

When we had 6000 changed out to 7000 Keystone service center would not issue new ratings. Several years ago, maybe that is different now.

If Keystone made the change, wonder why would not upgrade the weight ratings? Be different if somebody else did the work.

Phil, your pin weight seems REAL high for a 3400. My last CAT readings had my trailer at 13,820 and my pin at 2,580 (18.7%). Maybe you need to re-distribute a little. Not that it would solve all your weight issues in general, but you seem particularly nose heavy...

Note: The above is a FTer weight, also.

We did not ask, they said they could not, we said OK. At some point you are so happy to get something fixed you do not care about other parts of the mix. Right, wrong, whatever, we just did not push the point.

Common sense for a future purchaser, look at the specs as in brochure, look at the axel, oooooiieeeeeeeeee, axel larger than specs, yeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaa, we are good to go.

Plus we purchased unit with a 10 year minimum ownership time span in mind. Not worried about resale at this point.

Dave, I had it weighed by the folks from RVSEF. They weighed the truck empty, each wheel, then weighed the wheels again with the loaded trailer hooked up. Feel confident they did a good job. pin weight works out to be about 22% of total trailer weight. I think I added fuel before weighing as I was on way out of town. that was 25 gals extra. Anyway, will talk to axle folks this week and also Keystone to see if they can make the changes. Remember the 2006's came with 6000 lb axles and the 07's with 7000, If I read everyone correctly. 2000 lbe is a lot of difference. Oh well, what is a guy to do.........

Actually, Phil, my July 19, 2006 build date made me a 2007, but they were still putting 6,000 lb axles on the Montana at that time.

Phil, I really feel your pin weight is suspect - therefore your calculation for your total trailer GVW is suspect. If you had another model of Montana, I might think that pin weight might possibly be valid. But the 3400 is the traditionally the lightest pin weight model.

I may be way out in left field, but if, after several months of fulltiming, I am running 13,820 GVW with a pin weight of 2,580 (and we have a VERY heavy 4" king size memory foam mattress topper and we also have that rather heavy slide out tray in my basement), I think that would be a very standard pin weight. Your 3275 pin wt is almost 700 lbs more than me.

There may be 3400 owners out there that approach that pin wt, but from what I have read on this forum over the past two years, that would be surprising to me.

Phil, I would get another weight - maybe from a CAT scale - to double check that weight before you sell the farm... Not saying you are not overweight in some areas, but that pin weight for a 3400 really makes me wince...

Maybe other, more seasoned, MOCers will be able to set me straight on this.

Isn't that your cargo weight. Looks like your calculating the total weight on the truck. The pin weight is probably less. You need to weigh the truck separate from the trailer to determine pin weight I think.

I am in the same boat at 3100 lbs cargo weight.

Anyway it is still to much overweight. I have to do something else as well. Going to a GM dually I guess.

If it helps in the comparison, our GVW with 2/3 tank of freshwater is 14,620 with pinweight of 2,860. CAT scale weights.

Dave,
Based on the numbers phil provided I get 3,275 for his pin weight also. He had:
Truck unloaded (no trailer) = 7,525 total
Truck loaded with trailer = 10,800 total.

The difference, due only to adding the trailer is 3,275#, and all that weight is added to the truck through the King Pin.

3,225 lbs of that are being carried on the rear axle and
50 Lbs are being carried on the front axle.

Hope this helps.

Bill
