Turning off converter what happens?

I park my unit next to my house and leave it plugged in all the time with the refrigerator running. We camp every other week end and it seems better to just keeping everything going instead of on and off all the time. Now to the converter/charger would it be better to shut it off or disconnect the battery? My reason is I do not want to over charge the batteries

The refrigerator operating system operates off of 12 volt DC.

Click on the "IQ4 Smart Charger," cheap and easy to hook up (just plug it in). With the IQ4, you can leave your converter on all the time, and your battery will not be over charged.

I installed the smart charger and leave mine plugged in all the time. Worried about the batteries too, but checked the other day and they are fine - no boiling.

Did you then disconnect the charger that is part of the converter? Our did you replace the converter with one that had a three stage charger.

Yes.. what they say about the IQ4$smart charger... Although I did not have one and the camper is always plugged in along side the house and never had a battery problem.

Tom,
check out this link... http://www.iotaengineering.com/iq.htm
The IQ4 plugs into the top of the IOTA converter with a phone type cable and manages the converter better than the stock controller.

Tom,

Evidently the Iota converter already has the 3-stage capability and it's activated once you plug in the smart charger. Iota makes converters with our without the smart charger option. Keystone just uses the one without.

It's a simple install, and cheap.

Need clarification on this slightly confusing statement at the bottom of the above page:

Most DLS Models are available with the IQ Smart Charger already internally integrated within the unit. External IQ models can be installed by simply plugging the IQ cord into the Dual Voltage jack located on the top of the DLS Models. The IQ circuitry is then automatically engaged.

I just changed out my converter (Iota DLS-55) - on warranty - I believe this means that I do NOT need the Iota smart charger (that I was just getting ready to buy) then, as it is already integrated into the unit I just installed???

Good question, Dave...I'd call Iota with the exact model number, they should be able to give you the correct information.

Dave and cheryl,
As someone else pointed out IOTA does make a converter with the IQ4 already installed. To the best of my knowledge Montanta doesn't buy that one but cheaper, non-integrated version. We strongly recommended to Mark Krol (Keystone rep) at the NE rally that Keystone take another look. If I can buy the IQ4 on my own for $28 Keystone should be able to cut a much better volume deal. Ideally, they would buy the ones with the controller already installed even cheaper than buying the converter and IQ4 seperately.
Now to help you answer your question in your particular case, you need to look at your converter. I had a chance to look at my replacement converter before the dealer installed it....It might be a little tougher to look at if it is already installed. what you are looking for is a little green LED indicator light. This will send a variety of messages when the converter is installed and powered up (might not be so tough to find installed after all). The flashing light codes are on the web site mentioned. In my case I could see where the light would have been visible throught the case of the converter and I did not have a light there so I didn't have the built in IQ4 and had to buy it seperately.

Hope that helps. No light=no built in IQ4 controller

Bill
