Speaking of Alaska

Did not want to hijack the Alaska discussion.

Curious of you who have taken the trip. It would take us 3-4 days straight thru just to get to the Canadian border. How long do you typically take to get from there to Alaska? And I know once you hit the Alaska border you still have a lot of time ahead to see much. But just trying to estimate how long it would take to make the trip without killing ourselves.

I would love to take that trip some day. Family health issues prohibit it in the foreseeable future. But maybe some day.

Bill,
We made the Alaska trip in 2010 for the second time. If you go to the blog I posted you can can follow along for our trip.
It is sort of awkward to follow. You have to look at the time menu on the right side of the page and open up each date and go to the end of that page and you will have the dates in order.

BB--you can follow our trip journal(see the link below) to see our complete 2007 trip. From San Antonio, we took about 4 weeks to get to Tok, AK. Lots of great sights along the way--since we planned to stay about 9 weeks in AK and the salmon run did not get going until July--we just took our time. Everyone has their own travel speed--so enjoy the journal and send me messages if you have any questions.

It depends on where you plan on crossing the Canadian border, as Canada is a BIG country. We crossed into Canada in North Dakota and from there it took 7 days (we stayed an extra day in one spot to rest and get the laundry caught up). Coming from Texas, I would head to Washington and cross in to British Columbia there. That will save you money as everything is higher in Canada, especially fuel. BTW: Parts of BC rival Alaska for beauty and wild life. And be sure to heed the Moose crossing road signs as hitting one those will ruin your whole day!
