RV story on news tonight

I just caught the tail end of the 'tease' about NBC Nightly news tonight's show about RV's, I think speaking to the fuel costs and the impact on travel.
You might tune in for it. (Or Tivo it)
Here at Isla Blanca Park in South Padre, there are many 'regulars' who are not coming this year, many cancellations. You are allowed to 'Roll over' your reservation on the spot you rent for one year, then it goes back into the pool. Many are doing so.
KOA here on the Island is about 1/4 full, we are about the same here now, I don't know if that is normal, as we haven't been here this early before, but many say it should be fuller by now.
How about where you are? (Away from home, I'm talking about.)

Ours doesn't really fill up until after Christmas. It looks about the same as the past 2 winters. Most of the cancellations so far have been more health related than fuel costs and we do have a few new rigs filling some of those canceled sites.
Will know better around January 5th.

We now live in Yuma AZ. Where...trust me.... there are Snow Birds aplenty! All of our friend and acquaintances who usually come down for the winter are already here. I look at the many RV parks along the highway and they all look like they are filling up fast! I do have to admit that we are looking at shortening our travels and exploring this next summer when we go back up south for the summer because of the fuel.

Ozz, The news item was about Winnebago sales being an indicator of the economy. They are off by 20% ergo the ecomomy is going to tank! As with all indicators, the Morton salt stock should be going up. Bob
On edit: By the by, we missed the snow and ice up here at home, just colder than a well diggers------!

I was going to say that also the piece would be about rv sales being an indicator that the economy was about to tank. I was just home to Illinois and there was an article in the Bloominton, Ill Pantagraph about rv sales being down for the first time in a long time.

Ok, but isn't it on tonight? Maybe they had that info. in the tease. 20% is big.
I don't think we will get a 20% increase in our retirement.....

We are on the east side of Brownsville, (Paul's RV Park) and although the park is suppose to fill after 1st of the year, there is definately fewer people than in the past as of the first week of Dec. It was reported that our Thanksgiving dinner attendance was down about 30% from last year.

People tend to wince a tad bit when they figure what it will cost them to tow. We are tossing about a figure of about $750.00 from the Irish Hills to Mission, that is ONE way. That of course depends on the price when we actually get on the road. That number was tossed around the ole calculator a few weeks ago, when a friend of mine paid $3.29 for gas.

5 years ago when Al and I did a run at Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and back to the Irish Hills our total fuel bill was bout what it will cost us to go one way this year from Irish Hills to Mission. Course then we were towing a 30 ft TT with a F 150!

When we are at stickbuilt home we drive very fuel efficient Escort as much as possible, but even more, we just don't go out driving. We do all errands at same time, no pizza runs, no "need a gallon of milk" runs. Have done this for years, you know you have perfected it quite well when you cannot remember how many days it has been since you have not been past the mailbox. 6 to 10 days is not uncommon for us.

Yep, the fuel cost IS going to change the way some RVers do things. Sadly, it will affect the retirees first. Blast, wait all our lives to do this and the rules have changed. That could depress ya!

Found this on another forum, "National RV Holdings filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday". The dealer I purchased my 5th wheel from discontinued selling RV's, not sure why. I am still seeing the campers and RV,s on the main north/south routes here in VA, most heading north? Flying J had some nice RV’s parked there last night but not full.

I am watching the east coast DNS and the word is that the special report is on Winnebago. They being a barometer of the general economy. When sales drop for them the economy takes a dump too.. Will watch it at 6:30... Dave and Betsy

I watched it and it looks like sales of RV will be down. But, is that a sign of recession. Not necessarily. Many economic indicators, other than housing and Rv's, are still positive. Yes, higher fuel prices will cause some to opt out of RV'ing. The mainstream news media wants a recession and is telling everyone that one is coming whether it's true or not.

The story is based on the slump of RV sales. RV Sales indicate what the economy is doing in general. When families start spending less on things like RV's and vacations it means they are watching their money more and worrying more about the future. The overall impact of everything from groceries and gas prices dictate the sale of RV's. They also talked about how in the 1980's RV sales were a first indicator of the recession(a debated depression).

I don't think the "mainstream media" are trying to scare anyone. They are simply stating the facts. I thought all of this housing talk on the news was hogwash. Then we went on our trip last week. I couldn't believe how poor the middle class were in most areas. If many of the small towns we stopped in were any indication of things to come in the next few months hold on were in for a bumpy ride.

My personal favorite from the story was the last line about manufacturers making future RV's cheaper. How can you make most of the models cheaper? Most brands already fall apart in the first 5 years.

Well I remember the last realy big slump, and saw many good RV companies pull the plug, and close there doors forever. that was the last fuel shortage, I sure hope that don't happen again.

I still say that the trucking industry could put a stop to these higher fuel prices. Why is diesel so high? Is it because the demand has gone up with SUV's, etc? Why has the automotive industry not increased fuel mileage considerably for 50+ years?

Here is my big question. Why did the Exxon/Mobil CEO that resigned get a 450 MILLION DOLLAR severance pay? Exxon/Mobil profits are about 72 Billion dollars a quarter. It was just reported on the news today that Venezuela accrues about $100 million a DAY in oil revenue.

We, the masses, suffer, while the industry profits immensely.

The trucking companies did not or could not (in years past) pass along the fuel surcharges, now they can. This is the only difference.

It cost us 384.00 in diesel and 84.00 in C.G fees(three stops) to travel the 1156 miles here to Davenport, Fla. We came to Florida instead of Az as Fla is 1/2 the distance, to save on the fuel cost. We will also be working at Disney to offset the cost of wintering. This CG says it will be full by the 15th of December although there are many vacant spaces right now. It is not just RV sales folks,,When things get tight the luxuries start to go. I judge the economy by what I see for sale in folks front yards and driveways on my bus route. Second cars/trucks, Motorcycles, ATV's, Campers,Lots of campers. We are watching our $ this year and are paying as we go.

The park we are in in Az is only about 2/3 full this year. Last year it was full and the overflow parking had lots of campers every night. Things are definately slow here this year.
