Slides in or out?
New to a 5ers. Watching some u-tube videos on hooking up and unhooking, I noticed a few hooked up with the slides still out. Is this a common practice?

I often hook up while DW is still inside with slides out getting every thing inside ready for travel.

You should be all done inside and have the slides in before you hook up especially if on a uneven site less stress on everything.

Sometimes I hook up with the slides out, other times when they are in. If the site is level and I am ahead of the inside management I might hook up. Often she is ahead of me though.

It makes sense to me to have everything as stable as possible before moving the slides in or out. I generally wait until they're in before raising or lowering the landing gear in order to hitch up. That's just what I prefer to do. That doesn't mean other techniques are wrong.

Hi
I have seen a class A driven thru the camp ground in Marion NC with all slides out.
We now have 9 years and over 100,000 miles on our Montana and the slides are what seems to be showing the most distress from all of the stress while moving.
We have seldom hooked up with slides open but often open the slide for the night while still hooked up,

While I seldom hitch up with the slides out, normally pull them in before. I really don't think that there is a problem either way. But with that said, If we are set up with the front legs very 'short' and need to raise the 5er a foot or more, will always pull them in, reducing any tendency for frame flex and any slides binding.

We have a different routine. We both finish up inside and put the slides in then go outside to both do the outside hitch up. We've towed ours 95,000 miles. I also might mention that with Bill's recent hospital stay while on the road I was happy that I knew exactly how to hitch up since he wasn't allowed to drive.

I don’t see the level issue. The side to side level does not change. The jacks are down. Leveling blocks, if any, are in place. Wheels are chocked. Nothing side to side changes. If the truck is not level, the hitch head tilts to match the trailer pin box. I may have to raise or lower the front a little to match the hitch. But the degree change in front to rear level is minimal. If there were an extreme front to rear level issue I do not do it. Otherwise I see no problem. Slides are in before jacks come up and we start to pull away.
We are old school. Maybe an issue with auto level systems?

We've been doing this fulltime long enough now that we get things done about the same time. Most of the time, it is much easier to pickup the water hose, drain hose, and electric cable with the slides in, just like while setting up, easier to get those things set up prior to extending the slides. I figure, what's the hurry, and why risk stressing the rig just to save a couple minutes?

I too agree with what rohrmann said. It is a lot easier to get some things with the slides in. I have on occasion moved enough to level the trailer because the side with slides always seems to be lower with the slides out when setting up.

I do not know which way is better but we find it more convenient to set up and tear down with the slides in as everything is easier to reach.

I don't think either way is "better". Nor is there any problem with either. Just a matter of what works best for you at the particular time and place.
