Avoiding the Grapevine to Arizona

We are leaving from Northern California to Casa Grande next Saturday. We have done the trip before staying at Lake Castaic RV park just north of Santa Clarita on I5. It is almost exactly half way. If there is snow on the Grapevine, we would head east on 58 through Bakersfield.

We probably want to travel a bit further to make for a shorter drive the next day. Does anyone have a suggestion, Barstow, Victorville area? Not sure if it's best to go down 395 to 15 to 10 or keep on 58 to 40 to 95 to 10?

Any suggestions?
Just want to be prepared if there is there is snow! Just checked OldGuards photos!!!

Thanks!!

Ken

Ken, when we go to Q we stay over in Bakersfield then go to Q by way of 58 to 40 to 95. If you want to overnight in Barstow they have a nice KOA there or you can boondock in the parking lot of Peggy Sue's Diner. You still have to go over the Tehachapies (sp) where there can be snow on the road in bad weather.

Ken,
We've been both routes and much prefer the 58 to Barstow then on the 40 to Needles and then the US 95 south to Vidal Junction. Vidal Junction on hwy 62 into Parker. Then 95/72 east and south to either AZ 95 toward Quartzsite or stay on 72 to the Vickburg Cutoff. Take the Cutoff to I-10. Then take the 10 to hwy 85 at Buckeye. Then the 85 to Gila Bend. At Gila Bend take the I-8 into Casa Grande.

This route avoids the Grapevine and of course all the LA / Riverside traffic. Someone said that there was some construction on the Vickburg Cutoff but there is so little traffic that there should be no problem. And there is a nice cafe on that road. The Kofa Cafe. A nice mom an pop type cafe with lots of parking for big rigs. Enjoy and have a great trip. Dennis

Ken, we usually stay at the Sierra Trails RV Park in Mojave which is a Passport America park. We stayed there on the way down this year for $12.25. It is ok for an overnighter, water and electric only if you are in the back.

From Lodi to so ca

99 to Bakersfield to
58 to Mojave to
14 to Palmdale to
138 to right I - 15 ( san bernadino)
Left on to 215 to San Bernadino
Right to I -10 to Redlands/Indio*

This is how Bob & I have going since we went to Quartzsite last year for 1st time.

Just asked him again how he wanted to go back next month and the answer was same. We have done the other aforementioned trips when we would travel with kids with no trailer!

Hope these ideas help.[

If you don't want to go all the way to Barstow on 58, there is a "funky" little RV park in Boron called Arabian Nights. We always stay there so we can walk to Domingo's Mexican Restaurant on Main Street downtown. It's not a high end park by any stretch of the imagination, but it's clean and the people are nice. Live a little!!
