DRW Tire Rotation

I have always had tires rotated with an oil change on SRW vehicles, upon first oil change the service writer said it was not normal to rotate the rear wheels unless there was visible wear. Now we are due for our next oil change and my owners manual does show proper rotation for all wheels. Does any one else with DRW rotate the tires with an oil change or only when necessary and is it cost effective, removal and rebalance ?

new to DRW myself, but I heard depending on he rims, you need to remove teh wheels and and remount them for the rotation. which is why they are resisting.

Have not done a rotation involving drw yet. I have put on a new set upfront, but dually still look great.

Never rotated tires on my 2000 F350. Wheels will not interchange and the cost of 6 off and 6 on + balance doesn't add up. We just run em till the backs wear out first and get new ones.

We get our RAM dually tires rotated, front to opposite side rear, rear to front opposite side.

The inside wheels are steel wheels, so they just go side to side.

My aluminum rims are the same, so the front get turned inside out on the rear.

Swap the fronts and leave the rears to wear out. That is unless you have a truck with all 6 steel wheels, then you can rotate them easily. Around here it costs around $90 to have the dually wheels broken down, switch wheels and rotate. Just not worth it.

Keep in mind that on DRW you need to keep the tread depth the same for both tires or the tallest tire will carry the brunt of the weight.

Discount Tire rotates mine and rebalances the tires free since i bought them from them. There are usually 2 guys that do the rotation and i give them 5.00 each and on my way. This is why i use Discount Tire and they fix flats for free also.

Thanks for all the input, Ford suggest rotating the fronts from left to right and the same for the rear when needed.

When we first started using radial tires, we were told that when rotating, the tires had to roll in the same direction as before. That was why when you had radials rotated, they had a chalk mark indicating direction of rotation. In other words, on a dually, if rotating w/o breaking down, left front has to go on outside right rear and vice versa. That also means the inside duals stay in place. Radials will disintegrate if made to roll in the opposite direction. Only way to rotate all tires is to break them down, not because the wheels won't fit but because radials have to roll in same direction.

Just goes to show how greedy some shops are. They'll push rotates on SRW all day long. Throw a little extra work in and it suddenly becomes "unnecessary".

The problem with swapping fronts is the outside shoulder tends to wear first. Swapping left to right won't help. You can easily swap front to rear aluminum rims. Ford has convinced some that they can't be swapped and that the wheels are incompatible. The only thing different between the front and rear aluminum wheels is that there is no clear coat on the rear wheels. Big deal. Clean the rims. If you wait a really long time, you will have a lot of work, but again, simple. and you will gt much more life out of a set.

I've owned 2005 Ford and 2011 chevy DRW's and never rotated the rears. I got good even wear on those rears, and what I feel was really great mileage. As others have said, rotating with fronts and others could put two together on one side that are not the exact same diameter and that is not good. If you really want to do this, then do it more often than recommended, and do it regularly so you don't get much difference in tire sizes.

If you have arrows on your tires indicating they are unidirectional then you are correct.
If they are multi directional tires which most radials today are, you can can put them in on any position on your DRW.
Costco balances and rotates all of my Michelin tires on my DRW truck yearly and they are doing great.

No longer true on most modern radial tires. Tire construction has improved from those first generation radials and belts don't tend to separate. They will do fine rolling either direction.

Every ten thousand miles I rotate the DRW. I opted out of aluminum rims for steel, black walls so any tires in any position.

40 + years ago radial tires needed to be ran in one direction so you switched them from front to back and never side to side. That is no longer the case.
