Power cord separation

We pulled into a cg this afternoon and went to hook up the power cord and noticed that the cover had completely separated from the male end. Of course, our warranty expired last week. The wires look fine, they are just exposed to the elements. I am assuming this can be repaired? Anyone else have this problem or know who the manufacturer is? Maybe Camco? We have no ideal how this could have happened so any advice on how to prevent the same thing from happening in the future will be appreciated. Could the cord just be too heavy for the plug?

Susan

Yep, if it is 50 amp it is very heavy. I am forever fixing bothe ends. I have tried everything and the plugs always separate from the cord. That said I have become an expert at repairing them.

Get a new male plug and cut off the old one, then install the new one. https://www.amazon.com/Camco-PowerGr...co+50+amp+plug

Then purchase a right angle adapter for the trailer end so the cable hangs straight. https://www.amazon.com/Camco-55572-L...co+50+amp+plug

This should solve your issues and will prevent stress on the cable jacket.

Many of us use the right angle adapters to avoid just this problem.

I had same problem and did what Rohrmann did - new plug and right angle adapter.

We have a right angle adapter on the female end but it is the male end that came apart. I am thinking that we are going to have to find some way to prop up the male end to take the slack off the plug.
By the way, how hard is it to change out the plug? We are really not good with electrical stuff except for replacing a wall outlet.

Thanks for all your replies, Susan

I agree with Bob on the right angle plug as it takes the stress off the plug. As for the other end i wrapped the cord with a lot of electrical tape and it has held up real well and this was probably 3 years ago. As for as changing out the plug the wire is 6 ga. so it is very stiff. Even when changing out the plug i would go ahead and tape the plug and cable together so as to have an head-start on what will probably happen again. When the tape and plug starts getting real limber again and starts to fray just remove the old tape and re-tape.

Update: Our right angle adapter does not drop straight down but it sticks out at a ninety degree angle to the outlet. Weird. We have also contacted Epicord (the only name found on the original electric cord) via email to see what they say about the problem. Seems the cord should have lasted more than a year. Will keep you posted as to weather or not we hear from them.

This was one of the items on my warranty list. If Keystone does not stand behind it, I'll jut replace it. The cord should last longer than 6 months of light use.

We were one week out of warranty and Keystone would not pay to fix it. Surprise
surprise.

Take out the screws that hold the receptacle cover on the rig and turn the inside part 90 degrees, then reinstall the cover. This will not harm anything inside, and then your adapter will hang straight.

Same as Rohrmann did. Not a hard task to replace receptacle. We are on our third fix since 2013.

OK, you all have convinced me we can replace the plug. Also found a camco video that also helped.

Thanks again everyone.

We took the screws out that hold the receptacle cover in place but the cover won't budge and we are afraid we will break it trying to force it off. So far we are leaving it as is and wrapping the cord around the sewer line container to keep pressure off the end. Seems to work fine.

No word from the cord's manufacturer about their faulty product but that doesn't surprise me in the least.
