Mattress advice

We need to change the (original)mattress that came with our unit.

At home we have the sleep select bed....aaaaah, we just love this setup, but do not want to purchase the same for our RV as we are only in it for short trips, so until we retire can not see spending the $1,200 plus on a mattress.

Any suggestions on mattresses.....But before you do let me tell you about our needs.

One of us is light weight.....one of us is on the beefier side.

We used to use one of the memory foam pads on top of our current mattress, until recently we discovered that this memory foam was actually causing us to be more uncomfortable as it would memorize our body form and when you turned over it would swallow you back in the same hole. Of course this pad was only 2" in thickness.

Because of our memory foam pad experience we are a little nervous to spend money on the mattress that we see advertise as "8 inch memory foam"

So we are looking for a queen(short) RV mattress that is firm.

What are other couples using that have a weight difference between the two?

Any suggestions? Brands? Websites? Stores?

Many Thanks

Our bed was as hard as a rock, so we bought a king size 4 inch soft foam topper and cut it to size. Bed is now very comfortable. It cost less than $300.

Sears has a ton of selections of all the major name brands for good prices and 12 months no interest with your Sears Card. We bought a Seally Cushion Firm Queen to replace the junk OEM Mattress that comes with the unit.

Denise, a good quality pillowtop mattress works for us. Our Select Comfort bed is in storage. Couldn't bear to part with it but it's too big for our Montana.

As for length, just tell them what size you need. We bought in one of those mattress warehouse places and they had it cut to our specs for no additional charge. If they want to charge you they're ripping you. Just tell them you'll go to a competitor who does it for free. Vicki says our mattress is a Sealy.

We just took our 15 inch thick Seeley from the house out to the rig, if your home mattress is not too heavy you might be better off just hauling it out to the rig before you roll. We love ours but it can be a pig to drag in and out of the rig but worth the good nights sleep. And since we are in the rig for at least 8 months of the year we like to be comfortable.... Dave

Kevin and Denise, We had a very expensive mattress in our stick house before moving into the RV. We decided to try a 4 inch foam topper from Costco over the RV mattress and we really love it. It actually sleeps better than the expensive one we had.

We have had a Tempurpedic mattress at home for over five years and it is as supportive now as when we first purchased it...we have considered buying one for the fifth wheel, but think that it may weigh too much...spoke to some people out on the road who did just that and when the extra weight caused some problems with their bedroom slide, their warrantee claim was denied because of the extra weight (was not a Montana). Another issue would be the rounded corners on the OEM mattress...I do not believe Tempurpedic offers that feature. For now, the OEM mattress will have to do the job.

We use a standard size queen mattress which hangs over about 6 inches at the foot, still clears the dresser when slide is in. We then put a Serta 4 inch 4 pound memory pad from Overstock.com on top...very comfortable. We bought a king size memory pad and cut it to size with an electric knife because most pads are a few inches too small in width.
