Alternative to G614
Gentlemen:
In light of the lively discussion on tires I have made the very personal decision to replace the OE Tires that came on my Montana. We have rental trucks and I deal with a friend of mine who supplies me with tires. I gave him a simple request: find me a tire that I can use on my Montana and will not have to worry about it failing. His response was to tell me that he had many requests from transporters of pre assembled sheds for the same item. They constantly overload their trailers and transport them long distances. He said the tire he recommends and has been proven over a period of 3 years by the transporters is this:

Now before you get all bent out of shape, yes it is a Chinese Tire. It is made by a company that makes nothing but heavy duty tires. If you do a web search and go to their website you will find it is almost identical to the G614 but at 60% of the price. It is listed as a LT tire but is stamped on the sidewall "for trailer use only".
I feel Goodyear is putting the tariff on the G614 to pay for all the claims on the Marathons.
It is a G rated tire good for 3750 lbs at 110 psi.

And in keeping with DQDick's premise of reserve capacity and the capibility of the tire being tied into the construction and resultant weight, I give you this:

I believe this is the heaviest tire Dick has ever chronicaled.
I did couple the tire installation with the installation of my TST Monitoring system with the internal sensors. This picture shows one tire installed with the readout of the internal sensor in that tire and another sensor waiting to be placed in the next tire.

Hope this helps someone to sleep better at night.

Hopefully those tires will serve you well. Perhaps I misunderstoond your term "tariff" as the G614s are made in the USA.

By tariff I meant in light of the steep rise in the price of the Goodyear G614 recently, I feel they raised the price to help cover the claims they are paying for the failure of other tires they sell.

My supplier gets his from TBC Corporation who is owned by Sumitmo Tires and is the largest mfg of private brand tires. I know that doesn't help you as I am in central PA.
When I did a web search on the tire name NTB came up as handling them nationally. You may want to inquire with the tire stores near you if they can get them.
I get them wholesale from my supplier and they were $210 each. He sells them for about $250 retail.

I have used Sumitomo tires on tow trucks and was very pleased. Will look into this when G614s wear out. That appears to be a long time yet. I did notice that they were 14 ply tires and G rated on the label. Thanks for the post. Larry

LOL - We'll have to try to get out your way one of these days. Quite the catch-22 - long road trip on unsafe tires in order to get safe tires....

My friend in the AG service business, recommended these tires to me. He hauls heavy equipment, pipe, etc. He said they are a great tire. As he said, if you keep them inflated properly, never had a problem, try to run them low on pressure and they will chunk the tread
(blow out) just like any other tire. Which I feel accounts for most tire failure.

All tires fail, if you Google GY G614 Failures, you will find a amazing amount of failures. And when you consider the percentage of trailers equiped with them (small percentage) when compared to many other series, you have to think, is it the maintenance, the overloading, road hazards or just a combination of situations that cause the majority of these failures, and not the brand or series. TPMS, careful monitoring of loads and turning radius care, can do alot to make all of our tires, no matter what brand last. We can fault Chinese manufacturing, but I do find it amusing that in Europe they fill the same way about tires made in the USA, they want tires from their own countries.
