RV storage costs
I got a letter in the mail this evening that I thought I would share with the forum and see if anyone else has an opinion.
We have stored our RVs, past and present, at the same location for around four years. Each fall we get a call or letter from the manager make arrangements to pay off for the upcoming year in order to obtain a discount (free month of storage).
Today, in the mail, I received a demand from the storage facility stating we owed an amount approximately 20 percent more that last year and it was to be paid immediately and they would not allow us access until it was paid.
This is the FIRST contact that the storage facility has made to us. They had our address, phone numbers and email. Needless to say, I am not impressed and was wondering if this is the norm?

Doesn't sound right to me. Ours was raised from 25 to 30 a month and we were given notice in advance.

It certainly does not sound very nice, but it sounds like they want to firm and final right off the bat. I wouldn't call it normal to treat customers with negative assumption.
You might want to call them and tell them you don't appreciate their verbiage to get a feel of their intention. Sometimes it just might be a misunderstanding. And if it's not, give them the "you don't appreciate" their tone of voice. Maybe they want to anger the old lower paying customers so you leave and they get charge more with a new customer. Ya just never know.

It sounds like they have a line waiting to get in, and as soon as you pull out someone will take your place. I'd look elsewhere if it were an option.

Any chance they sent prior data via mail and you never received same??? Just a thought. This then would be a second notice?? Seems a bit strong for 2nd or even 3rd notice, eh??

Thanks all, seems to confirm my impression. There is almost zero chance that they attempted prior contact, they had all of our contact information including email, cells, etc. I have called and emailed them but they have yet to respond. I'll wait for an explanation. Not sure i was a lower paying customer though, the bill for the year is over $1,100.00!

I pay over $2500 a month in Huntington Beach but I would find another location even if it were farther away from my home if they sent that to me.

Sounds like new management or they were short on cash! Recently my storage company called to make sure that I was in my spot or had my RV with me--they did a walk around to verify who was there. I appreciated the call. By the way we pay $60/month for outside storage on gravel, with video surveillance, that is about 15 miles from downtown San Antonio. The storage area stays pretty full with about 125 spots. It is a short 10 minutes from my home.

Harv, do you have an annual contract with them? If so, what does it say regarding the renewal of said contract? Are you past due on any of the old contract? If you are not in violation of any agreement and they are holding your Montana and refuse to let you have it... I am no attorney, but I think "grand theft" and "extortion" are two terms (and maybe some others) any starving attorney would love to hear...
Maybe I misunderstood you though. They may hold the option to renew the contract at their leisure...

I don't feel bad at $105 a month, covered, video surveillance, night guard.
I just wish I could put it in my own yard. No room.

Just an update. It turns out the letter was written in error to us.
We actually pay annually; works out to $83.00 a month. Parked on dirt / gravel, gated with no video and/or security although I believe the guy next door checks. Their explanation about the error to us left a bad taste in my mouth as it means to me the same letter was meant for someone else. They are blaming a loss of records after a recent ownership change. We are looking to store it elsewhere. Unfortunately, there is just no place for the monty at the house. Anyone want to go in with me and buy a piece of land somewhere???? haha

That's OK, Bill. You had a lot of us feeling much better about our storage fees - for a while. Of course, your location in California made that figure somewhat believable...
Now we can start feeling bad again...
Also, some of us were kinda wondering what someone with your wealth was doing pulling a Montana...

David we're far from wealthy and just enjoy a fifth wheel rather than a motorhome because there is more room and this is our fourth RV.Carol, likes to read and I enjoy golf and fishing this way we can continue to live together and complete 50 years next August.

Boy are we lucky we can keep ours at home... Winter storage at our local fairgrounds is 8.00 per foot that would be 320.00 per month (40 feet)
It is indoor secure storage. If I had to store it during the summer here in town at 85.00 per month it would be costing me @2100.00 per year total plus tax..
