Must Have--Calif Recreational Trailer Endorsement

I didn't even know I needed this endorsement to tow my Monty 5th Wheel. Thanks to reading the forums, I was able to obtain the endorsement today.

You can find the manual for this at the Calif DMV website under, "Recreational Vehicle & Trailer Handbook." If you fall into the category that most of us do, ie, towing a 5th wheel between 10K and 15K, you will just have to take a written test. No fee is generally required and in some cases you may need to renew your class C license, so be prepared to take that exam, also. If you tow a 5th wheel over 15k, you will need to do many other unpleasant things, such as a possible health exam along with a driving test. Working with the Calif DMV on this issue may make you want to sell your 5th wheel for one that is under the 15k GVWR.

I read the handbook three times and took the test today. Its twenty questions and you can miss three w/o taking it again. I missed two. According to the DMV clerk who administered my exam and DL44 application, the exam is a one time thing and does not have to be renewed.

The results of not having this endorsement on your license is that, should the CHP stop you, you might experience some unpleasant consequences.

Finally, these requirements only apply to California licensed drivers. If you come into Calif from out of state, you have nothing to worry about.

Living in California is the real benefit!

We're Special.

1) Special license for towing not required of other drivers from other states who drive in California.
2) Special gasoline formulation only required in California
3) Special diesel fuel tax (even for out of state)
4) Special ammunition restrictions but not if you're from out of state.
5) I could go on.....

A nice state to visit, but too many people, too expensive and registration of vehicles very high compared to Oregon. Our Governor is trying to change that with a big increase over time.
