Follow Up of Keystone approach to the step recall

I cannot even describe my bewilderment. I just got our rig back after taking it to have the "fix" applied to our Hickory steps that is part of the recall. Our 3850FL has the steps on the front and rear of the rig, but for some reason, the rear steps were excluded from the recall fix?? Totally absurd. I have contacted Keystone for an explanation as to how the front steps may fail, but the rear ones are deemed okay?? I cannot wait to hear the justification for this one.

Cause the rears are magic steps bingo! They have the anti-gravity option that sn't available for the front steps. Just keep a watch on them and fix them yourself when you deem necessary without having to deal with keystone. John

Illogical Keystone logic.
BTW, the top left rivet (as you are facing them)on the steps sheared yesterday. I hammered it out and replaced it with a 3/8 stainless steel bolt with stainless washers and nylon lock nut. This has given me pause to wonder if/when the other hardware on the OEM steps will fail.

Bingo, they replaced the rivets in both our front and rear steps.
The thing that got me is they replaced two rivets half way down the steps but the two on the top steps nearest the rig were in worse shape and were not on the recall. I replaced these myself. The rivets were so soft it made me wonder if they were aluminum.

My rivets broke on a trailer that has been used about 8 times. And guess what? It was the rivets closest to the door, NOT the rivets fixed in the recall. More Keystone quality decisions...

Another irony is that on the step they did fix, bolts replaced all of the rivets on all of the steps. I also thought the recall only involved two steps. I do not think even Keystone knows.....

Lots of luck having them return your call. I've left two voice messages in the past month.

I fixed mine myself after the first recall done by my dealer lasted a week.

If it was me, I'd fix it myself also. Too important to let Keystone do it as cheaply as possible.

I am hoping Keystone steps up to the plate and sends me the repair kit so that both sets of steps at least match. If not, I will be contacting Lippert directly.

We would not settle for the recall fix or even the 2 sets of replacement steps they put on our unit after Mary's fall and broken wrist. We think the last ones they put on will work and are much sturdier than any others they gave us prior. Have to change the mounting holes they put the new ones on(need to raise the steps one hole higher) which will result in us having to put a portable step at the bottom of the steps but that's OK since the steps are a whole lot better now.

Bingo,

Our dealer made the submission for the recall and they requested and got the nuts and bolts for both steps. The recall we received was to replace the rivets on the top two steps (the one close to the door and the next step down) not all four. Amazing the different applications of a simple fix

I sent you a PM

I did not call, I emailed and have received an initial response agreeing that the rear steps should have been repaired. They also expect me to haul it back to the dealer that did half the repairs (a 3 hour trip and $100 in fuel each way). I have replied that the propsal is not acceptable and await their response, before I start climbing the ladder for an acceptable resolution.

Is the recall applicable to all models thru specific model years? I have not received any notification from Keystone or my dealer. Sounds like a pretty simple fix which I will do myself if needed. If someone could post the size of the repair bolts utilized by Keystone I would appreciate it.

The recall is listed on the Keystone Montana web-site which shows the affected VIN numbers. It is only for the four step models.

I mentioned this on another post. My front steps broke in first six months of ownership of the 3750. The replacement steps were different. I made them replace back steps so they would match. I think I just got lucky.

Thanks Bingo. Looking at the recall on the Keystone steps, the model years and vin seem to appply to 2013 years and newer. Explains why I havent received a notice on my 2012 four step. However, seems others on this forum sound as if they have issues with their 2012 model.

As a follow up, I have received e-mailed confirmation from Keystone that the rear steps should have also been fixed per the recall notice. As a good faith effort, Keystone has agreed to pay my fuel for the return trip to have the rear steps done the same as the front. Outstanding and unexpected response!! I have contacted Camping World in the hope that they will be as accommodating and can get me in and out of the service shop in a day since he repair only takes an hour or two. Kudos to Keystone Customer Service are in order (from me at least) since they seem to get a bad rap on a lot of other things. Color me pleased at the moment as we await Camping World's response.
