Generator

Anyone carrying a Champion 4000 generator. Looking to get a generator for just those "in case" times. Don't plan on using it much as we prefer full hookups. Kragen's has the Champion 4000 on sale now for $199 and it has the 30 amp RV connection. Would have to carry it in the back of the truck. Bigger than two of the Honda 2000 generators with paralllel kit, but also, $2000 cheaper.

You might want to go and listen to it run first. Construction generators are typically very loud. If you are planning on running any electronics on it, there is a potential for swings which could damage your equipment. Sounds like you need to research why most people spend the extra $2000 for a quiet rv-type generator. I personally have a Kipor IG3000 based on hours of research and forum input, and am looking at alos purchasing a Honda eu2000 for use on our boat. Do not take any of the above as a recommendation or endorsement, just food for thought.

rgreynolds,

I agree with bncinwv. Listen to the thing before you buy. The most important long term issue with a generator for an RV is the noise level. You WANT the quietest one you can find. In a camping situation there is nothing more irritating than a generator that is too noisy. Most construction type gens are not made to run quietly.

You will appreciate having a quiet running generator and just as importantly your neighbors will appreciate it too! And there is NO WAY you can quieten a construction gen down to an acceptable level. I've seen all kinds of attempts to make them quiet but I've never seen one that actually worked!

Check out the Honda, Yamaha and Kipor. IMO these are the quietest running gens you can buy. If you go with a "built in" model then the Onan may be what you want.

Good luck.

I was told that the frequency and voltage regulation isn't as regulated on the cheaper units. It may be fine for circular saws but it may be harmful to electronic circuits. Just a recommendation to do the proper research. I like my Honda eu2000i.
