"All experiences are personal"
Just to note that we spent the last July Fourth in the Beaver Valley Campground near Cooperstown, NY. It was peaceful, quiet, and friendly. I know this doesn't prove anything, but it is just to share a good experience.

An example as to why us cheeseheads refer to them as FIBs. Also the Asst Chief was blowing smoke. As a retired law enforcement I can tell you the city PD has every jurisdiction anywhere in the city limits. oops forgot you are talking about IL.

Yes, we too have been in this situation....one time a guy next to us had a meth lab in his travel trailer! This was at Mexico Beach! Another time, a fellow 2 doors away was dealing drugs..10 to 12 cars a day for pickups...I sent an anonymous email to local sheriff and a day later he was arrested!
This is why you should keep your tires aired up & bearings packed..then you can move!

Kinda makes having a neighbor with a smokey fire seem desirable. Confrontation is seldom pleasant and it's always best to be prepared. Your decision to leave was prudent and well advised. Civil, well mannered people can have a good time without causing problems for their neighbors.

If we camp on 4 July , we stay at Myrtle Beach Travel Park; no we're not fulltimers. The management there does not play. There are a few fireworks and some imbibe, but if they step over the normal good neighbor policies, they're gone, home or to jail. It really should be expected by the park and prepared for in advance, IMHO. As for our family I shall continue to be a "Sheepdog". Larry

Does anyone really travel without a weapon? I looked at gate guarding down here in south TX (Eagle Ford Shale) Some of the companies do not allow firearms in your RV. Nuff said for me! Lots of places in south TX I would not be without a firearm.

We have camped in 46 states and never felt the need to carry a weapon.
I have never saw a gun solve a problem at a campground or RV Park.

We started to this past summer as we started to boondock in a few remote places. Gives us piece of mind. You never know when you might encounter an unsavory human and or varmit!

Frank,
Like the old 'Kiss and tell..or not tell.??'
Maybe I does and maybe I doesn't....
There are as many opinions on that as there are on Chevy's, Fords, Dodges and GMC's.

For the first time in my camping life, I felt threatened. We camped at a city campground in Hamilton, Illinois. We have been camping there for about five years with no issue, never crowded and low fees. This was our first time camping over the 4th of July. When we pulled in, the place was packed. Guy across the way offered to spot me but I told him I was fine. Got camped and was beat so we hit the sack early. Lots of noise, music and drinking. The next day we found out this group had a family reunion. They brought in about a 30' trailer with DJ the next day. Finally got to sleep despite the music and carrying on. About 2:30 am there was a huge explosion. I got up to ask them to quiet down. They said "you already called the cops once" (which) we hadn't. One of the guys was really drunk and kept trying to come after me. I was told to get my f'in rig and leave. That's exactly what we did the next morning. Called the asst. Police chief, mayor and parks super. The police have no jurisdiction in the park, the mayor has no power over the park and the park didn't know there was a problem. I guess when someone gets hurt, they'll have some power to change. As for us, we'll camp over in Iowa from now on.

rames14 did the smart thing by leaving the next morning. Think where he could be today by pulling out a gun that night.

Some parks don't allow weapons in the RV?????? How are they going to know unless you blab about it or pull it out and start waving it around or plinking in public? I always have something, but it is for protection, not aggression. I don't want to be accused of bringing a knife to a gun fight and if my or my wife's safety is in jeopardy I will not be afraid to use it.

As mentioned previously I am retired law enforcement. Don't have a gun with us and never will. Just remember the first law of carry is if you draw it be ready to use it and if you are ready to KILL someone so be it. As to advise, if you want to carry a "piece" use something that will do the job. A pistol requires accuracy, shotgun with fineshot only requires you fire it in the right direction.
