External Refer Fan

A couple of weeks ago when the temp ran in three digits for a week, my refer had trouble holding temp. I am thinking of putting an external fan in to blow across the coils and up through the vent. Is that the best way to do it? Some have said this is the best way. Some say the best way is to mount the fan at the top of the vent and just to have it draw exhaust air instead of blow air across the coil and out the vent. I'm looking for input. Thanks.

I don,t know your layout but if your ref. is in a slideout then you already have a fan in the top near the upper vent. It may not be working.

The temp index has been in the 100's here and will be higher today.I have been checking the fridge and the temp stays at a steady 42. the freezer 5 so something is working right. We do keep on of those battery powered fans in the fridge. The temp control is set at 2... We are told there is a fan somewhere but have never been able to hear it run...

I found the fan on my 3295, and heard it run only once, when I was standing real close to it. During very warm weather, my refer stays about 34 to 37. I thought there might be a switch to cut in on or off, but it is thermosatatically controlled by the upper fins on the refer.
If you do not have one, try a small fan from wally world, on that has a clip on base. plug it in at the bottom of the refrigerator vent (outside there is a 110V plug) and point it 'up the chute'. Did this trick on my pop up during hot weather, kept everything very cold.

Mike, I added a fan. I posted about it on the other thread, same general topic. I haven't been able to find the OEM fan on our 3295RK. I understand there is one but I haven't found it yet. Our fridge was doing fine, I just didn't want the 100+ weather overtaxing it.

We can hear our fan when it kicks on, and it does kick on when the slide with refrig in it is facing the sun. Temps not measured, I can feel a bit of warming in there, but have yet to feel it is dangerously warm, not warm enough to force me to toss food out for fear of spoilage.

Steve,

Take off the top vent and look straight down the chute of the back of the refer. This is where mine has been installed. Looks to be the size of a large computer fan. The temp lead is installed near the top of the uppermost coil. Mine is a 2006.

Thanks, Jim. I will dig out the ladder or maybe pull the picnic table over to check it out. I'm curious. Ours is a 2003 but has the fridge in a slide and it has two vents. Thanks.

That dsign hasn't changed on the 2006's. Good luck. Careful when looking down the chute, pretty tight and I nicked my forehead on the top of the coil when doing it. May need a mirror.

On a 100° day last weekend.......and Frig on gas,
I placed a 10 inch table fan near the service door on the outside wall of my 2005 Mountaineer TT. The fan blew into the Frig service compartment.
Temperature inside the Fridge was lowered about 2° in the day time. 41° to 39°. That night about 11:00 Pm, with outside table fan still blowing temperature inside the fridge had suprisingly risen to 47° ! . Go figure.
Being frustrated with that I switched Frig to AC and turned fan off. The next morning Frig Temperature was 35°.
I have had "trouble" with the Frig keeping cool enough and the Air conditioner freezing up from the time the weather became warm. I think these problems are directly related to the poor workmanship of Keystone.
For the record I will contine to read about and try new things to correct these and all problems I am having with my Mountaineer.

G McCall, I wonder if it's a problem with the appliances themselves, since refrigerator problems have been very rare in the Montanas/Mountaineers. At least very rarely is one reported. Ours does just fine in 100+ heat like we're in this past week. At 114 in Death Valley last May it did "ok" but was not as cold as I would like.

Does yours have the outside temperature control? If not, inside on the right side fin there should be a white slider. It has the thermistor on it that acts like a thermostat. On the wall next to it **may** be a comment to slide it up for colder, down for warmer. Might be worth a check. Sorry if you know all this. Not intended to offend. I'm just never sure how much someone already knows.

I may have struck upon an answer to some of our Frig problems. I am copying a post I made from another discussion, but it may be related.

"FTR, My trailer is parked at my deer lease.

With all the Voltage drop inside the trailer on hot days, the Power Outlet box outside still reads 115 Volts. I have an AutoFormer but the boost light did not come on.

A note of interest here is the fact that I decided to unplug the frig from my trailer AC circuit and plug it directly into My RV outlet box. The frig has never worked so well as the Frig temperature did not get above 35°. I can't get to the Frig receptacle with my Volt meter, but it appears that receptacle is suffering with low voltage as other parts of my trailer.

Makes me wonder if my other appliances suffer from low voltage. My AC worked fine this past weekend but usually Freezes up. With me not runnig my frig through the trailer Circuit did I help My AC volts out ? hm.....

For a cheap, low watt dc fan, go to any computer store (we use Best Buy) and you can pick up a muffin fan very cheap. They come in a couple of sizes and last 50K hrs. Just use some cable ties to hold them in place. Great replacement for that noisey bathroom fan---ours runs all the time to keep moisture and odor out.

And you can add a simple switch inline with the fan. I spliced directly into the black and white wires going to the board behind the fridge. The computer fan had three wires, so I just touched wires to the truck's battery terminals to find the right combination of two wires.
