50amp to 30 amp service

we are new to 5th wheels,and the montana 3650RK.we had a 26ft pull that required a 30amp service.can you run a 50amp unit on a 30amp service if you watch your useage, and is there an adapter avalable.

Yes, You can use 30 amp service as long as you don't run heavy load appliances at the same time. You can get an adapter avalable at an RV outlet store.

hi,
looking at your wiring for your 50 amp serive, you may notice two breakers that feed all other loads. one will be a 20 amp and the other a 30 amp. the 20, dependant on how they set yours up, will power either your AC, especially if it is a 15,000 btu upgrade or the washer dry outlet. the thirty will feed all other loads thru the breaker panel, therefore if you are not running the loads that are feed from the 20 amp breaker, you are limited to 30 amps by your internal breaker.

Sorry, grey-ghost, but that's NOT the way ours is wired!

On a 30A setup, everything comes off one leg [common buss in the breaker box] while on a 50A setup the buss is divided into two segments - one per each of 2 legs.

Each leg of 50A is 50A 120V. (50A @ 240V total)

Right on Bob... ours is the same. The main difference is that an RV box does not allow the use of ganged breakers to get 220 volts... its made different then the household ones, so don't let any one sell you a 220 volt appliance.

Or at least our breaker boxes don't accomodate 220 volt loads. Some bus conversions use 220v heaters for hot water heating.

Mine is also a pair of 50 amp breakers but technically (if the power supply could handle it) we have 2 50 amp 110v power legs for a total of 100 amps of 110v. Granted the 50 amps of 220 is also true but doesn't apply. I haven't found many campgrounds that can supply a full 50 amps during peak A/C times in the summer so it's kinda out in left field to think about it sometimes. I have thought about the 2nd A/C unit but most places don't have the amperage to support them anyway.

i was just this past week at a camp ground where I couldn`t get the 50 amp service.Had to settle for 30 amp.It was hot out so the AC was a must.Unhooked-leveled-hooked up all the hoses and pluged into camp ground power.5 minutes later-POOF nothing worked-lost all power.Checked the breakers,they were fine.Called up to the office and a guy came out and it turned out to be a bad plug from the camp ground.They replaced it and all went well the rest of the weekend.

But he did reccomend to run the hot water heater on gas and also the fridge.I did run the hot water on gas but left the frige on electric.

i have to say that the temp was in the mid 90`s with high humidity and the One AC did very good in keeping us comfortable.
