Front 50 amp plug

I know this has been asked before, just wondering how difficult it is to put in a 50amp plug where the onboard genes would go. It would be easier to get power to the coach when traveling in lieu of taking out the cord all the time. I have the inverters/generators in the back of the truck. Thanks

Tony

It is not hard to do at all if you have some electrical installation know-how and /or experience. The area is generally wide open and easy to work within.

Yes Youtube could be a useful resource for you. Basically you will need to install the recepticle in the desired location of the front of your unit. You can run SOW or some other suitable electerical cord from the recepticle to a transfer switch. Knowing Keystone installation you will want to place the transfer switch close to your panel. There should be ample "extra" feed cable from the existing power supply cord. You will then need to remove that existing cable from the 50A breaker in your panel and install it on the remaining input terminals on the transfer switch. Then run a new short piece of the same sized cable from the transfer switch outlet to the 50A breaker in your panel. Secure all cables, tighten all connections.

It is even easier if your RV came "generator prep'd". The transfer switch is already there and all you have to do is run the wire to the other side of it.

No matter what you do, make sure you install a transfer switch before the panel and not just hard wire to the panel.

Ok no it’s not generator prepped. The only thing on the ceiling is the level up box. I guess this will be harder.

Gen prep also has the large sheetmetal enclosure in the front compartment for the firewall.

Gen Prep'd has a metal shroud on the left side of the front compartment and a start/stop switch inside the RV near the front. In some cases they have hidden the transfer switch. But if you have the shroud, there is an Xfer switch.

I’ve done exactly what you wont to do. You haft to install a transfer switch at or before the fuse box in the main power cable from the outside. Then wire the main power cord back into the transfer switch then a cable the same gage wire to the front of your camper. Then drill a hole for the plug in making sure you don’t cut a frame member. It will take some time to figure how to route the wires and install them but it’s all what my brother would have called dumb work. You can either use an automatic or manual transfer switch. I made one and installed it in the convenience center.

I did exactly what you wont to do. You need to install a transfer switch somewhere in your main 50 amp cable before the fuse box. Then run the 50 amp cable into the transfer switch and add another 50 cable to the front of your camper. Finding a place to run the extra cable and running it could be a challenge. You MUST add a transfer switch. Then drill a hole in the front of your camper. Be sure to not cut a frame member of your camper.

It will require some time and effort but it’s mostly what my brother would have called dumb work. I use mine to run my generator without dragging out my main power cable while I’m still hooked to the camper.

I did it the easy way I had my RV mechanic install the 50 amp plug in the front. And yes it cost me $100.
I can use the one in the front or the one in the back I also have my generator in bed of my truck. I have a Twist lock 50 amp to 30 amp adapter and then a 30 amp cord to my generator. My rig is 40 ft long at campgrounds I use the one that is closest to the power box.

It's not difficult, I installed a 30 amp in the front of my 3018 Montana 3811ms. If your rig is pre wired for a generator then it easy. Look for a gang box in you storage compartment and follow the wire back to the transfer switch (mine is behind the panel of the storage compartment), just to be sure it is there. Unplug from your electric both shore and battery. Open the gang box and connect the wires - color coded. The hardest and most stressful part of the job is drilling the hole to install the front outlet. Double and triple check the install location so you don't hit a beam. Check all connections you made and power it up to test your install.
I used a 30amp outlet in the front because I run 2 Honda generators in the bed of my truck. I have no generator permanently install in my rig.
This isn't very technical but it's how I did mine.
