Steps

Had one of the pins break on one side of the steps. Couple of questions. Will a 5/16 bolt work adequately to fix this (tried a 3/8 last night, went through the outside hole but not the inside). Also are the step supports worth getting. I have a 4 step set-up.

If by the word "pin" you mean the rivets they used to connect the steps together, then it a matter of what the shear strength of a common grade 5/16 inch bolt is. A grade 2 (what you normally find in most bins at box stores) is 3405 lbs, a grade 5 bolt is 5521 lbs, and a grade 8 is 6902 lbs. The shear strength is the force put into the side of the bolt and as used in the steps, it is a simple single shear. So in your case, you can load up the step with 3400 lbs of weight and expect to see no issue. You can find grade 5 and grade 8 bolts at home depot, lowes, and other stores in most cases as well. Hope this helps, John

We did this a few years ago and it held until the fall when we went to the Rally and used the Lippert discount to get some better replacement steps.

Hi

I would use a grade 8 bolt long enough for the smooth shank to go thru both pieces of the steps, a washer or 2 on the nut side so it couldn’t move over where the threads are in the hole and a nylon stop nut.

Everyone else pay close attention to the pivot arm’s close to the main rivet we had ours break into about ¾ of an inch from the rivet and had to get a mobile welder come out to weld it back together.

Seven years with the old rig and had two of the rivet break and replaced with bolts but never had any of the base metal break/snap like this.

Wonder who makes the steps on these things, and if they have a longer warranty than the basic 1 year that Keystone provides? Steps shouldn't fail on that new a rig, unless they are defective or were damaged outside of normal use. I think that pin you refer to is really a step rivet, where the shank through one piece of metal is larger than the shank that goes through the other piece. To do this right, you need to drill out the smaller hole to the same size as the larger hole. Then, with a short bolt, use a locking type nut, either the aircraft style nut that has a nylon insert, or the type of locking nut that is crimped on one side so it has to be forced to tighten against the crimps. You want the assembly slightly loose so the steps will pivot open and closed.

Bill and I added the Lippert Steps. I was worried about them blowing out while going down the road in heavy winds like our old ones did but they didn't.

I use a bicycle cable lock to keep ours up. LOL
