Block Heater

Hello

I pulled the trigger and bought a new 2017 ram 3500 DRW. My old 2013 had a block heater from the factory installed. question is, i heard the Cummins puts the block heaters in at there factory and ram just puts a cord on and charges a lot of that option. Is this true?

All 3 of my Rams came with the block heater & cord installed and ready to go. It was part of a options package on each truck.

I haven't had a Ram yet that didn't come with one on it Cummins puts them on to keep them warm in the winter so they don't start like a ford!

As far as I know, Cummins puts the block heater in all of them, but some configurations of the Dodge do not have the cord installed.
I got a cord at a local Cummins Dealer way cheaper than getting one from a Dodge dealership, but it turned out that my truck already had the cord on it, ...I just didn't look hard enough for it I guess! =O)

Here's a video of where you should find it if your truck came with the cord.

your Ram has a block heater from the factory. you can get the cord from amazon, Ebay or any parts store its around $15.00. simple install right next to the oil filter under the air cleaner. you tube has many videos on this install.

Both our Fords had them 2005/2008. We do not need them as we are never in cold weather.

My 2015 F350 has a block heater. I used it once when in Northen Ca in the mountains. Temp got down to about 23 or so the first night and the truck started ok. Forgot to plug it in the second night and the temp got down to about 18 and the truck started ok so I guess it needs to be much colder to require the heater.

That is correct , if you feel under there you will find a plastic cap that screws off. The cord then attaches by pushing it on and screwing down the collar. The cord can be purchased from Ebay or amazon. Did this on my 06 Dodge

I used to have a Cummins ISL, 8.9L in a motor home. The manual said to use the block heater if the temperature was to be 40 or lower. Lot less wear and tear on the engine.

Since Builder Bob knows how Fords start ... mine must be the exception ... she's always agreed with me when I want her to start cold ... hot ... and inbetween. Marching on past that ... I use the block heater just as much to have instant heat in the cab. Like said earlier ... a block heater just makes it easier on the engine whether it will start with or without it. It's on the truck, so why not use it ...
