Question for those who travel (or live in) Arizona

Howdy,

Which is the best route from Tuscon, AZ to The Grand Canyon? I try to look at (and follow) the roads on Google Earth, but they are not always up-to-date and not all the intersections have traffic cameras.

Thanks in advance!

Really only one way. I10 to Phoenix and then I17 to Flagstaff. Then whatever highway goes straight to the canyon.

When you get to Flagstaff there are two ways to go. West on I40 to Williams, then AZ64 north to the canyon. The other way is wend your way through Flag traffic and narrow roads to AZ180, which goes northwest and connects to AZ64. I wouldn't suggest that route unless you know Flag well; even without a trailer it isn't fun.

One good option is to stay in Williams and take the train into the park depending on how long you plan to visit.

Times two on the train. Take it up one day, stay at one of the hotels, and take it back the next day. We even saw a very large herd of elk when we went.

Note: Going to Flagstaff can be a very heated trip. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR GAUGES! If you get tooooo hot pull over and cool off.

Keep those RPMs up there.

Agree a bit on the over heating issue. There is at least one hill about 7 miles long, I think. I can cruise up it at around 55 or so. However, semis must (I think) stay on the right lane. And if you don't manage to get to the left lane because of heavy traffic, you are stuck and going about 25 mph. My truck pretty much can't gain the speed up enough to get back into the left lane at that point. During the summer, I have turned off my A/C for a few miles to keep things cool.

We have decided to stay down in Fort Huachuca for a few days after we leave Tuscon and then will travel to Gila Bend, then on to Williams, then up to Grand Canyon Trailer Village. We do try to avoid the major cities, so I look for roads that take me around the city. We don't care if it takes longer to get there - just want to take the safest & easiest routes.

Looking at the Map, I am wondering about this route: 85 out of Gila Bend to 10, then 303 around Phoenix to 17 to 69, then take 89 to 40 and into Williams. Then take 64 up to Grand Canyon. Any issues with this route?

Depends on the forecast. I am on the 89 right now. That is north of Prescott and there has been a lot of sbow around here lately. Prescott received several inches in the last week but it is all melted now. Beautiful drive.

89 is a tight twisty road north of Sedona. Not easy to drive with or without your rig. It also has one long narrow twisty hill near the end of the route. 85 to I-10 to 303 to -17 to
1-40 is a lot easier, even with the hills.

I think you are looking at 89A? I was looking at 89 out of Prescott. Do you know anything about that route?

The drive between Tucson & the White Mountains to Show Low & on to G.C. at Flagstaff is very scenic, But, I wouldn't try it in the winter.
