roof screws

My large slide has screws popping through the roof of the slide where the roof meets the outer slide wall panel. It looks like it is where the roof plywood attaches on the outside end. They are covered with some sort of tape and then sealed. Only a few of the screw heads have appeared and only a partial part of the head. It looks like they weren't set far enough. I plan on resetting them but not really sure what to cover them with as they move across the rubber weather seal on the trailer wall when the slide closes. Whatever I use would have to be durable and unaffected by the rubber seal rubbing on it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

I would try eternabond tape if you have some or have time for it to setup...then self leveling caulk used on rubber roof. Can't hurt.

Thanks
I didn't have any tape but I did have some dicor. So I cleaned and gave a dap of dicor and leveled it a little with my finger. We will see how it holds up if it doesn't I will have to get some eternabond.

Get those sealed up, mine were like that too, and they LEAK! Clean very well and put some new Eternabond OVER the old stuff. The issue is they used screws meant to be countersunk. The metal bracket just has holes and no countersink, therefore the screws stick up. The second layer of Eternabond leveled out nicely and hasn’t worn through.

You can make a small slit in the tape redo the screws then cover the hole length of the slide with Eternabond & dicor sealant I had to do it on one of my other 5er's like MARKAsaid they will start leaking into the wall and then you will have a bigger problem! They now make the Eternabond tape in a tan color to match the TPO roof color.

As stated above, you need eternabond tape in your tool box.

X2 to 1retired06! Also, don't hold back on dicor--used plenty for a good seal. Remember--only the birds will see your handiwork.

Thanks Guys!

I will order some tape and redo it. I did unscrew one and saw that it was tapered and it looked like the metal strip wasn't countersunk. Another maintenance item can't check these roofs enough!
Thanks for the replies.

I put on Eternabond in the same spot about 2 years ago. It already is worn thru again from the slide rubbing the top. I know (dealer confirmed) that the opening for the slide is too small - the rubber flaps on the top actually curl upward in a U shape because having no room to lay down. So there is always a pretty good friction on the screw area.

My rubber flaps that are on the outside never completely flap out when extending the slide. Part flips out and part stays flipped in. I always put a ladder up and flip it out when rain is expected. The sides of the slide have the same problem. It is a real pain in the A---. I found this out the hard way. We had a heavy rain, the trailer was parked in the yard and wasn't level. the pitch caused the water to run towards the rubber flap which was flipped in. all the water ran towards the inside which isn't sealed. Water ran to the flange that is on the inside of the trailer leaked through the seem and dripped out of the light fixture. It took me several days to dry everything out and seal the inside part of the roof ( the same spot as the outside with the screws) but the inside. I now make sure the trailer is always level and the rubber flaps are flipped out when the slides are out and rain is expected.

Put slide toppers on they help to keep the water off the seals and out of your 5er! We live in Washington St were it never Rains (HA HA) best thing I ever done on all are 5er's we use are's all year long so you need them here for sure!

My 2006 Monty had issues with rain running downhill into the trailer if not level. But I think the newer ones have 2 flaps on the top of each slide - one like always on the outside and another on the inside somehow. So I think they may be better at stopping the rain leaking in. Other thoughts anyone?

Just an update. I slit the tape, removed screws and countersunk each screw hole. I used a steel counter sink. Reinstalled the screws. Cleaned the old tape with lacquer thinner and installed a strip of tape the full length of the slide over the screws. I cut the two inch eternabond tape in half to save some tape. I also wraped the tape over the ends. The screws are now flush with the aluminum strip and will not protrude again. I had to do the same procedure to all four slides. All is good now. All because Montana didn't want to counter sink the screws.
