AC Dripping

Our '03 2955RL came with a Duo-Therm 1500 low profile AC. Since new, the condensate fills the ceiling grille and starts pouring into the kitchen. It seems the drip tray is too small to catch the drips with the unit mounted on an angled roof. Anyone have a similar problem??? Any known fix?

Yup. On the 'o3 models some of the ACs did not have the water damn installed. Go back to your dealer and ask him if that is the case. I think they can find out by the serial number of the AC.

I'll try it Mike, is the water dam a Dometic fix or something Montana came up with?

Brad,
Have you removed the cowling up on the roof? You might see an easy way to fix it, or re-route the drain water.
And, we would all be interested in getting the details on the receiver hitch mod.
Thanks, Ozz

I think it's a Dometic fix. There were a ton of them with that problem back when they first went to the low profile AC.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

My 03 3280RL was doing the same thing, dealer installed a plastic wing on the top of the water drip tray, said that the blower was blowing the water out of the tray. Worked for me. I also keep the nose a little lower when leveling.

Send a message via MSN to Ozzie
It would seem I have a similar malfunction, only mine is the occasional drip onto the carpet. Not the end of the world, but if there is a fix I would surely be interested.

Thanks for the info on the AC - on the way to the dealer. I checked again and it is the airflow that blows the condensate past the small catch tray, right into the grille below.

With regard to the hitch - done at a hitch shop in Loveland, CO as recommended by the dealer. Dealer said the 29 is pretty much the max length they will do it, which limited our size to the 2955RL right there. The hitch is a standard over the counter universal Type IV hitch for wide frames. The end mounting plates are not attached to the square tube so the hitch shop can slide them down the tube as needed for width, then weld in place. The tube comes with a premounted 2" receiver and hardware. The rear jacks were removed, and part of the lower cowlings on the Montana were cut back on both sides to allow for mounting of the side plates to the frame (heavy duty plates). Once mounted, the jacks were reinstalled to the hitch itself (I think welded). No interferences with the lower Artic covers.

Works like a champ for towing as well as other accessories (cargo tray, bike rack, etc.) The only problem we had was the hitch tube is mounted right under the freshwater tank drain causing a kink in the hose and slow draining. I haven't resolved it yet but should be an easy fix.

Please reduce the size of your pictures if you insist on posting them side by side. They are causing members to have to use their scroll bar to read the entire message. Thank you. RVWheels/MOC Admin.

As a Californian, that towing arrangement gives me the willies. While two trailers are permitted here if the driver has the proper classification, hardly anyone tows two together. I think every CHP officer on the highway would stop such a setup just to make sure the driver was legal.

Bill and Mariana,

We just returned from San Diego last week (no boat) and you're right, we did not see any triples on the road although it is allowed up to 65' total length. However, it is very common in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah where we do most of our lake trips. In fact, after seeing caravans of triples traveling accross Colorado and Nebraska each year heading for the water, we made our decision to pursue this configuraton. Each state is unique in the requirements, as shown in the following link. http://www.recvehicle.com/laws.html

Although I did get the willies the first time I looked in the mirror to turn a corner, it actually tows quite well. The boat follows the turning arc of the Monty, and tracks straight and true down the highway. You do have to be careful how you load the Monty, with a little more weight on the pin to compensate for the boat tongue weight in the back.

How do you back this up?

Slowly. I have had to back it out of the gas pump islands and onto the street - I was shocked it even worked. The boat goes the direction of the truck, with the Monty as the pivot. Nothing drastic or it all gets zigzagged, but it is possible. Both the Monty and the boat react slowly because of the length, which helps.

I've had a Class A motorhome pulling a Bronco II by tow bar with all 4 wheels on the ground - now that was impossible to back up.

Thanks for the compliment Ozz,

By the way, how do you like your new Ford? I've only had mine for a couple of weeks. I really hated to part with my 7.3L, but it was either leave it out of state for a month waiting for a new transmission, or drive away with a new one. Any problems I need to worry about (I know they fixed some of the earlier problems with the 6.0L)?

Brad,
Your picture brought me back to my days of living in Rapid City, South Dakota. Every weekend as I headed down to the reservoir with the boat I would pass at least 3 trucks towing a 5th wheel and boat. Was a very common practice and sight for me until I moved to Washington. No double or triple towing up here, actually found it rather strange. Enjoy and travel well!

Brad,
As a matter of fact, I have a rear end 'clunk' that Ford will not address, I have been to 4 dealerships, the area service advisor drove it, he says it is normal. Bull####!, it feels just like a 5 gallon paint can sliding and hitting the tailgate. It happens when under load, take your foot off the gas, then accelerate...Clunk.
Ford says it is normal, but any normal condition has extremes, mine is at the top of the scale.
I have commissioned an attorney and am suing under the Missouri lemon Law.
Other than that, it's a great stump puller and I like it.
Knock on wood, the engine is doing super.

Ozz,

I am really sorry to hear that, and I wish you the best in getting it resolved. That would bug me crazy, just knowing something is wrong. I always guess wrong - but it sounds like the ring and pinion has loosened up.

Don't let up on them, as they will quickly forget about you as the year rolls over.

Brad, yours looks very similar to ours. The 6.0 is an awesome towing engine, the transmission is just as awesome, and the brake controller is unbelievably smooth.

Ozz, no clunk here. Not far from Flying J on I-435 on the east side of the city, north of the river but south of Worlds of Fun is Midway Ford Truck Center. You might talk with those guys. They know Ford trucks far better than the car guys do.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!
