As I said.. We normally leave the gray (Shower) tank handle open. We use the backflush as Dsprik mentioned to flush out the hose after a black tank flush. We do, at least once a month close the handle and dump some happy camper in it and take a couple of showers just to clean it up. (soap scum, etc. Our black tank has cracked twice and it is now cracked again at the top. This is getting old.

Rich ck on putting a rubber nohub band on the 3" pipe if you have it repaired. It seems to keep the top of the tank from flexing at the outlet every time it fills and emptys. It sure helped mine.

richfaa,

When we had our black tank replaced (out of warranty) we asked the Montana dealer to explain to us what changes had been made to the black tank and the mounting so that there was a lesser possibility of the black tank cracking again. Their response was: "our questions were unreasonable, out of line and too much work to answer". Last time we have been to that dealer and have not expected any further support from Montana and really don't want it. Repeatedly, in this thread and elsewhere it has been stated that many Montana grey and black tanks leak if they get too full and usually crack at the top. I don't recall reading in the owners manual to not allow them to get full. All of our tanks are empty or very near empty when we travel. I'd hate to think what would happen if we traveled with them near full.

The manufacturer of the tanks recommends that they be supported by strapping and are so designed. keystone is not the only manufacturer that chooses not to do that.To many tanks leak for there not to be a design problem.
