50A SURGE GUARD INSTALLED

I got the hardwired TRC 50A Surge Guard 34560 and IOTA ITS-50A Generator Transfer switch installation completed today. After testing everything the surge guard and generator are working perfectly. I was going to wait until Quartzsite to do the install, but after Santa brought everything I needed I just couldn't stand to see it sitting around the house. A big "Thank You" to Nailbender for all the information and advice he provided me. With that it made planning and installing everything a breeze. Another project crossed off the Montana "To Do List"!!!

ON EDIT: Here are the pictures I promissed:
1. IOTA 50A Transfer switch installed aft of the basement wall and secured to the floor. This gave me plenty of access to the existing power cable. If I need to access the switch I can do so by removing a few screws.



2. Transfer switch all wired and buttoned up. The transfer switch was installed to by-pass the Surge Guard when using the generator. The Honda generator I use will cause an OPEN GROUND indication if ran through the Surge Guard and will not power the rig. By-passing the Surge Guard eliminates the problem when on generator power.



3. I mounted the Surge Guard on the back wall of the basement compartment on the passenger side. In this location the Surge Guard is easily monitored.



4. All panels back in place and Surge Guard ready for use.



5. I had an old 30A power cord so rather than installing an input receptacle, I just drilled 2 holes in the plug to mount it in the convenience center and then drilled a hole in the top to route the cable to the transfer switch. When I bring in the generator power I can just come up through the access for the water hose and and TV cable.



6. When the generator input is not being used I can put a female receptacle over the male plug to protect it.

I had a surge guard installed behind the entry closet with the readout on the stairwell wall. Two years ago while staying up in Lake Ponderay, Idaho we were in one of only a couple of short term sites. After a few hours, I figured out why it was only short term!! In mid-afternoon with the A/C running a big KLUNK sounded and the power went out. Find out the klunk is the surge guard switching off. About a minute later, another klunk and back on came the power. There was a brief moment on the readout saying low power. The voltage was down to below 95, I believe. We had to shut everything off until evening - no A/C. Neighbors said their son had the site the previous week and had problems too. As the amp usage went up, the volts went down.... Without the Surge Guard I wouldn't have known what was happening and could have blown out the A/C, TV, everything from what I have heard. The Surge Guard was expensive but well worth it.
Oh, I forgot to say why I bought it in the first place. Had a similar problem in Nebraska and temps of 106. The A/C quit (fried apparently). Had to replace it when I got home to AZ.
