Day/Night shade problem

A couple of our shades have become a little "stiff" when moving up and down and we noticed that both of them have a string on one side that appears to be wearing. It's not frayed but definately looks like it's rubbing against something. I've tried loosening both sides a little but that doesn't seem to help. Our 5'ver is about a year and half old. Is there some other adjustment that can be made that might help the situation or are we looking at a sooner rather than later failure?
If it does break are they hard to restring?
