Horror stories
Just purchased a Mountaineer 307RKD, and will take it out this weekend. I am looking forward to the trip, but with some reservations. This fiver has Mission tires on it, and I keep reading horror stories on other forums about blowouts, separations, etc on these tires. I sure don't want to spend several hundred dollars for new tires on a brand new fiver, so I'm hoping these tire failures are rare. Does anyone out there have any encouragement, or I am just an accident looking for a place to happen? Any advice appreciated.

Dennisl,
Welcome to the forum. Yes there have been problems with Mission tires and Goodyear and Cooper and Continental, etc. Just bear in mind that the majority of people have not had problems but they don't write to tell that. Just keep the tire pressure up, speed down and chances are you will be ok.

Hi Dennis,
When I saw Mission tires on my '07 3400RL I was concerned, BUT, after over 8,000 miles I am as happy as a clam with them.
Keep the speed down, as Charlie stated, stay under 65 MPH: the max speed rating on the tires, keep the tire pressure at 80 and you should be fine.
I also welcome you, and feel free to fire away with any questions, we will do our best to not confuse you, and help out.

We have Mission Tires on our Monty. In the past year, we have pulled it 17,000 miles. Havent any tire problems what so ever. and we go fast and slow.

Ditto above, tire pressure, rated speed, have towed about 4,000 miles this year, no problem, and can't see any wear. On a new unit if you have the aluminum rims, keep them torqued properly, a slightly loose wheel is just as hazardous as an underinflated one. Every time I check the torque there is always a nut or two that needs about a quarter turn. Torque wrench is an essential with aluminum rims.

We are just under 19K miles on ours since new almost two year ago. No problems what so ever. Tread is holding up well and the pressure stays consistent. I too was concerned at first, but the missions have been OK. Expect to get another year and 10K out of them at this rate.

Thanks very much for the warm welcome and the encouraging words. I will most definitely pay attention to air pressure and lug nut torque. By the way, the dealer said 80 psi and 100 lbs torque. Does that sound okay to you guys. Thanks again and happy camping.

Mission tires are no better no worse than any other OEM tire. Proper pressure, proper speed and you will be Ok. It is the China syndrome..anything made in China is cheap and no good..which would apply to just about everything we own..We just changed Mission tires after @15 K with no problems, tread good and wearing evenly.Changed because we wanted to get new rubber locally before leaving for the winter.

80 psi is correct, not sure about the 100#. I set mine at 120, I think there was a CD that came with the new unit detailing the torquing process. Can someone confirm the torque settings for my comfort also.

Bingo - Keystone says 110-120 http://keystonerv.com/media/pdf/Lug_Nut_Torque.pdf exept Cambridge.
No problem with our tires either Dennis, but boy do I have a hard time holding it at 65mph! Found myself creeping up to 75mph a lot last trip.

We got 60,000 miles on ours including the roads in Alaska before we changed. Never had a problem and we never drive over 63 mph.

I have pushed my luck for the last 10,000 miles, by running 70 some times a little faster if MUDCHIEF is pushing me.. I do torque everything 120# ON LUG NUTS and always check and maintain 80# psi. I have had no problems and all are wearing evenly. I do think after observing Stiles post and a few others that I might reduce my cruising speed to 65 but like a few have already said that speed kinda creeps up there with the MONTANA towing so easy.. So as everyone has already stated, your probably going to be OK.. Just follow the rules. Safe TRavesl John

Only thing I might add is if you have the rubber valve stems, I would suggest replacing them with metal stems. We don't log the miles lots on here do, but our tires look like new.

Dennis, ours also has Mission tires and they are doing far better than did the Goodyear Marathon tires that came on our prior three fifthwheels. Those Marathons were junk, in my opinion. I never managed to wear out the tread. They always blew first. So far the Missions are doing great.
I only have pictures of three different Goodyear Marathon tires, but for your viewing pleasure...

Oh my gosh
Just put new Marathons on my boat trailer this spring. The last ones were original and lasted over 12 years - a record for a trailer. I only replaced them because I figured I was pushing my luck way too far.
These pics will make me think twice about putting them on the Monty though.

You know, Brad, I blew several tires on my boat trailer but I cannot remember the brand.
