Generator

I have the opportunity to purchase a 5500 onan from a friend of mine with 47 hours on it, for a reasonable price ($1500). My Montana is not gen prepped, how much trouble and cost is involved for me to run this wiring and install this thing. I am very handy and have no problems doing it myself. I think I am capable.

Anyone done this?

Not too hard. You'll need a transfer switch, short power cord, I would recommend you install EMS if you don't have one. If you want remote start, you'll need a control panel and switch. You'll also need a fuel supply

Remember you will have to modify the front compartment with sheet metal and cut out some of the bottom. For some reason our Montana's do not come with the ventilated door/hatch cover. All air flow comes in through the bottom. If you do this project spend the extra money for a good transfer switch with DC coils or you can end up with a annoying buzzing when hooked up to shore power. Do a seach on transfer switch and you should find plenty of information.

Last but not least if you do this you might consider getting 40 pound propane tanks to replace your thirty pound tanks, that is if it is LP genset.

Good luck.
