Alaska and Dish TV

I am planning a trip to Alaska this summer and wondering if taking the portable Dish equipment is worth the space. It seems that I have heard that the reception may be impossible. Does anyone have any experience.

Thanks

Lee

I'd say 'impossible' is the operative word here. Even our XM radio didn't work much north of Banff, in British Columbia. They have satellite TV in Alaska. The dish points almost toward the ground. But it's not Dish and only in populated areas, it seems. We took a lot of CDs, such as season series of "Everybody Loves Raymond", etc. There isn't much TV reception anywhere unless the campgrounds have cable, which they do have in the main tourist areas and larger cities.

We have Direct TV satellite on our 5er and it worked good from Prince Edward Island and Halifax, N. S. I was quite surprised. I thought the satellite would be over the horizon from those places. You might take a map and scribe an arc from Halifax to where ever you're going in AK. Put the pivot point in southern most Mexico. Just a thought.

We were able to use ours (DirectTV) up almost to N. Sydney, Nova Scotia, but lost it when we crossed over to Newfoundland. The dishes we saw up there looked about the same size as ours, but were pointed almost horizontal.

Dish Net is available in parts of Alaska. I believe your small antenna will be useless. The dish used is about 1 meter. It looks like it is pointed at the ground and requries a very clear view around 115 degrees from the Anchorage area.

BTW, Alaska is best viewed on TV while in the lower 48, and in person while in Alaska. We will also be there again this summer.

Best Regards, Ted

You do need the bigger dish, and cannot get dish 500. You can get sattellite 119 which has most channels. Everything you'll need can be purchased up here for $114. The dish should point closer to 146 azimuth and 16 degrees elevation. I would recomend a satellite finder to help with the coarse adjustments. On your reciever (menu, 6, 1, 1) Set it to 119, spotbeam 9. That should be around 120 on the signal bar. Then check spotbeam 10 and it should be close to 70. spotbeam 9 might go from 125 to 120 to bring 10 up higher. If anyone will be coming up through Washington around the first part of June and wants to trade Dish's we won't need ours anymore. Any questions, e-mail me at Shane01638@hotmail.com
