propane tanks

I took one out to refill, turned the switch to the other tank, opened the new tank and could smell propane from the now empty hose. I put a 20# there until I get back Friday with the refilled 30#. I guess the lines will leak gas if not hooked up to a tank?

Mike, when I switch the leaver to the other tank my unit does not leak. I would say you have a problem with the switch over part of the unit.

My understanding, and it could be wrong, is that the lever on the regulator has nothing to do with switching tanks other than allowing the indicator to show if the tank is empty or full on the indicator. The switching of tanks for propane use is automatically handled by the regulator. Many of us leave both tanks open so that if one tank runs out in the middle of the night or while we are away the gas flow will automatically switch over to the full tank. If the regulator is working properly you should be ale to take out one tank without getting leakage from the connecting hose of the tank you took out. If I am wrong someone will be along to correct me.

Take one out to fill all the time and no leak. I always manually select the full tank before I disconnect and remove near empty one. I always refill before empty to ensure a good flow of gas all the time.

IIRC, that pigtail connection has a check valve in it. Perhaps the check is hung open.

The regulator when switched will stop gas from coming out of the open line. I refill mine every time like that. I helped a friend change a reg last week it was leaking around the switchover handle you could smell it all the way around the rv. they are a weak link on the rv. get a new marshall from a dealer or hardware store about 35$.

I agree with scductman. EZ fix and peace of mind. Best not to fool around with stuff that goes BOOM!
