Custer State park is very nice to stay at. No hookups though.
In Spearfish there is the city park. It has a very nice campground.
We usually stay at the Spearfish city park and do the northern hills attractions, then move to Custer State park and do the southern hills attractions.
Try to see the donkeys in the park! They are great.
Its a fun area with lots to do. We have gone every spring for about the last 7 years.

One of the MUST SEE attractions in that area is the Mastodon Dig in Hot Springs SD. It is just a few miles South of Custer. They have found over fifty Masons and hundreds of other animals there it is a very interesting stop. We stayed at Jelly Stone RV park in Custer. As we had two grand children with us. Also if the timing is right be at MT. Rushmore on the third of July. Their fire works are spectacular. They are fired from the top hf the sculpture and it is unbelievable.

If you have not seen the lighting ceremony in the evening at Mt. Rushmore you have really missed a lot. it is the most awesome and emotional experience you will have.

All the things everybody else has said. It is a great area. We were there in 2000 and stayed in the KOA in Hot Springs. It is a nice park and the management was very helpful and knowlegeable of the area.

Looks like you've gotten lots of information on S.D. We have been going to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally since '99' and staying at Kemps Kampground (www.kempskamp.com). Very nice and secluded, also nice people who run it. If you don't care for motorcycles, don't go there the first week in August.

For horse lovers, there is also the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary south of Hot Springs, SD. We had a wonderful time there among folks who wear their love for America's wild horses on their sleeves. Well worth the drive south from Keystone. A place we will definitely visit again when we haul the Monty out for an extended visit in the Badlands and the gorgeous Black Hills. The whole area is one of America's true treasures and a place that is as inspirational as it is beautiful. If you return from a visit to the Black hills and are not a different person from when you arrived, you were either asleep or dead!
