Denver to South Lake Tahoe

We need to drive from Denver, CO to South Lake Tahoe on 8/30/15. Anybody make this trip and have comments regarding grades, etc? We will be pulling our 5th wheel.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

In my opinion one of the worst parts is the last 24 miles from Carson City Nevada via Hy 50 to South Shore Lake Tahoe that has a 9 mile long 6% uphill grade. Uphill alll the way. It is a multi lane road and you will spent your time in the slow lane with big trucks.
It is called Spooner Summit.

Thanks Frank, I took a look at the rest of the route and it looks fine. I can put up with a 9 mile uphill crawl every once in awhile.

Done Tahoe from all directions. It's worth the trip and never had any problems. In my opinion HWY 80 has more problems between Elko and Sacramento than by any other route to Tahoe.

When talking about the Spooner Summit grade i was just saying to be prepared for the grade. The Spooner Summit grade is the best way to the South Shore of Tahoe from Reno. Going from Hy 80 to South Shore any other way would involve going from Truckee to Tahoe City on the North Shore and then taking the West Shore route around Emerald Bay. You do not want to go the Emerald Bay route pulling a trailer.

Agreed, not going near the West Shore route!
