Trip to Gatlinburg, TN

We are getting ready for a trip to Gattlinburg, TN next month and we are planning on taking U.S. 23 and not the interstate for the most part. The last leg of it will place us on RTE-321 into Gatlinburg. Looking at Google maps with the bird’s eye view it looks like a decent 2-lane road for the most part. Is anyone familiar with using it and have any recommendations or concerns with that road?

Down to Pikeville, I would say ok. After that going South, it used to be tough and lot of curves, hilly, etc and I would not pull my Montana thru there. Having said that it has been a while since I took that route. Do visit Pikeville area yearly.

The only trouble spot I remember on 321 was a sharp switchback a few miles outside of Townsend. The wife always gets scared on it but I pull the Monty without any trouble. I think if you are careful you should not have any trouble.

I know it used to be 2-lane some time back on parts of it at least through Jenkins, KY and that area. It was 2-lane the last time we went through that area which has been a while. It’s my understanding that 23 is 4-lane all the way now.

We made the trip pulling a 34' fifth wheel three years ago with no problems. This was from I40 east of Gatlinburg. There are no mountains or steep grades and the curves are not that bad. We stayed at Twin Creek CG which is right on 321 in Gatlinbury and on the trolley pickup route which takes you all over Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Twin Creek is where we will be staying as well. I wanted to avoid the heavy traffic going through Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and also in Gatlinburg. I believe we should miss most of it that way.
