Domicile Questions

I would love some imput on good states in which to have your domicile. Currently live in California and we know that is not a good state. Since we are just about ready to purchase TV and Montana, we figure might as well try to do so with a state that has no or lower sales tax, registration etc. We will be full-times as of Nov 07, working 5-6 months in California and the other months in different states. Any and all imput greatly appreciated. Teresa

Try a search on South Dakota, Texas, and Florida. The first two are the best. South Dakota will probably give you the best tax break and lowest insurance. Have fun with the transition.

We went with South Dakota and have never regretted it. No state income tax. No property tax on vehicles. No sales tax on vehicles although there is a 3% excise tax on the trade difference. No vehicle inspections. We use Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls for our mail forwarding. Also, SD is the third lowest on insurance rates in the country.

Texas has a similar setup but I'm not sure about vehicle sales tax and property tax. Maybe someone else can help with that. They do have an annual inspection.

Florida has no state income tax. They used to have an intangibles tax but I heard that's no longer the case (don't know for sure).

If you have questions about SD, please feel free to click the envelope icon above this post and email me. I can't help with the other states, though.

We went with SD also but with Americas mailbox in Rapid City due to this County no wheel Tax, all else we found in Sd is about the same and a great place to go to visit http://www.americas-mailbox.com/

I suggest looking at SD as well. Check with Alternative Resources, I believe they have offices in both Rapid City and Sioux Falls.

We are with Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls and we are very happy with them. I think the one in Rapid City is a different company but I do not know their name.

We saved a bundle over what we had been paying in Minnesota on taxes and insurances.

We, too, are with Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls and have been for about 4 years. Works for us. Agree with everything Steve Reigel posted.

We went with Texas and have had no regrets. Mail service through the Escapees RV Club. Domicile rules have been through court procedures and the Escapees RV Club Headquarters (Rainbows End RV Park) has met the requirements for us to use as our domicile.

No state income tax, no property tax. Sales tax is high (8-8.25%), but if you're full time you don't spend that much money in Texas. Insurance rates are higher than SD but we don't mind that much.

You may want to look at Tennessee also. They have no state taxes no personal prop. tax low insurance rates compared to some others and no state inspection.
Must be why all the country stars call it home.

In Texas as previously posted there is a state inspection on the truck only. I had a nephue in the military and took his PU out of Texas and the inspection was not an issue till he come back to Texas. I may be wrong but something like inspections kinda falls under local jurisdiction. As for insurance we went with Geico and I cannot believe the savings over Allstate. Progressive was a bit cheaper but did not have the cunsumer satisfaction rating Geico had. As for taxes it is sales tax only.
Hope this helps

There is a state inspection on RVs also. At least there was on ours. But it hasn't been inspected since October 2006.
