Skylight Cleaning

We purchased our unit used a couple of years ago and have just about cleaned, replaced, or upgraded everything to our own personal tastes and/or like-new condition. I decided to take the inner bubble of the shower skylight out last night and give the outer bubble and this one and everything in between a good cleaning. Well, to my surprise there is nothing "in between". I found that the inner bubble was painted on the inside (shower side)to hide bare rafters and wiring as well as wood shavings. I took the plastic bubble in the house and placed it in the shower and looked around for some good spray cleaner. I found a bottle of X-14 Soap Scum Remover. When I sprayed that on, the white paint just started to run off!! Now I have a clear skylight (but is VERY clean). I guess now I'll find out how good that new Krylon paint for plastic is !! I'll paint the side that faces out, though, so the inside will be smoothe and not subjected to the shower soap and water. I'll trim up some rubber roof excess material that shows and I'll put Eternabond over the rafters(new project) before returning the skylight. If I think about, I'll even throw in a few moth balls just because I can !! It should be better than new when I'm done !!

VanMan, It sounds like you have been very busy. I would be interested in knowing how the paint job on the skylight turned out?? I have not liked my skylight because it lets in too much light for a day sleeper.Did you throw in the moth balls.lol

Prariepoodle, I used 3 layers of large bubble wrap cut to size and put between the inside and outside pieces of the skylight. It cut down on the light and Sun coming in and also cut down on the amount of heat created by the Sun light. It also is a privacy screen!

JLBOZ60, This sounds like a very good idea because that skylight does let in a lot of heat in the summer time. Right now I just have a piece of that stuff that you put on the windows taped over it and that helps but has a habit of falling down. Thanks for the idea.

This site has brought a lot of little things like this to my attention and I’m so grateful for that!

I have an 04 model and the skylight has dust between the outer and inner parts also. Never thought about cleaning it or the heat factor until I read this thread and JLBOZ60’s post. The other thing is the amount of light that comes in and sometimes gets right in my eyes while trying to sleep in in the morning. I have used a tint that is a spray paint made for lexan. It is transparent gray and allows light to pass through. You can make it as dark as you want just by spraying more coats on. I was into radio control auto racing at one time and I used it on the windows of the car bodies I painted. It will adhere to the clear dome over the shower with no problem and won’t wash off. I will apply it to the outside of the inner part. If anyone is interested, the paint is made by Pactra. Most hobby shops sell it. Looks like I’ll have to do it soon because we’re leaving for the beach in 2 weeks and it would be nice to have it done before we go. Hopefully it will help keep the camper cooler, at least I hope it does.

Happy Campin

PrairiePoodle - I forgot those moth balls (and even forgot about this post til it came back up). I'm VERY impressed with the Krylon paint. It dries in just a few seconds and has a nice smooth application. I've now put on my "list of things to do" to remove and paint the outside access door to the fridge. That yellowed plastic just sticks out on the nice white exterior !!
