Receiver hitch

Have a new 2955 10th on the way and I want to install a receiver hitch to hold a bike rack. Then I can get away from the ladder rack
for bikes that I've been using for years.
I heard a rumor that Montana was on the verge of approving the installation of a 1 1/4" receiver hitch for this app.
Anyone know anything?
Thanks
Kandharry

At the fall rally in Sept of 07 we did see a prototype Montana with a receiver hitch as OEM. We were told it would be a " Option" after the first of the year. That has not happened yet but at the Tampa RV show we again inquired about the Hitch to a high ranking Montana person and were advised that the hitch was "in the works" I need one, I want one and I am gonna find out how to get one.

Make that 4, once we get back to the frozen north and get all the warranty stuff done I will order the hitch and do the install. If I wait for them to do it, I will be too old to RV.. Dave and Betsy

I would like to have one as well as we just finished filling up the back of the TV with all the "stuff" I can't live without when we start the PDI and acceptance of the new baby tomorrow...may not be room for my bicycle (definitely not both bicycles!). Doug isn't thrilled about putting either/both in the back of the truck or inside the new baby and there's no way I want to take the chance of pulling down the ladder (I know many people do this but I am a walking "Murphy's Law" so I try not to tempt him if possible.) so that option's out. Hope that this "option" comes to fruition in this lifetime.

OBTW - Did I see in one thread that Montana regarded a retrofit for this as a "no, no?"

Charles Wade was at the Spring Rally in Tucson and mention that they we're going to make a rack standard on back and than someone bought up the fact the license plate would be blocked.
He said they never though of that! Hard to believe,Huh!
All they would have to do is mount the plate to one side.

In Defense of the ladder racks. We do not care for them at all. They are difficult to use, they block access to the roof and it has been the opinion of many, including myself, that the ladder would, in time, rip off the camper. We have been using the lader rack for two years, had no choice, We have traveled thousands of miles over some of the worst roads in the country. The ladder is still firmly attached to the camper..no sign of stress what so ever. We are very surprised but pleased as we were sure the ladder would have torn off by now. IMO the problem is not as severe as most of us think it is.However..There is no reason Montana can not have a hitch on the rear of the camper..others do..Check out the Jayco (hidden hitch) Does that mean that the Jayco frame is superior to the Montana Frame????? Catch up Montana..

Anyone use the type that mounts to the pin box? I have seen a couple of styles of them since I have been moving around and would like to know where to get one, and how well they work.

Rich, FYI Forest River is now offering it as option on all Cardinal, Cedar Creek, Salem units, plus has wiring harness with 4 pin flat connector. They are calling it a boat hitch, 350lbs tongue weight, 3,500 lb tow limit.

OK.......I just talked to Keystone. They have approved a 1-1/4" receiver hitch for the Montana's.
It requires a frame modification, and it will be a factory option on new models.
When mine shows up.......hopefully this week, I'll see what Don's RV can do to retro-fit one.

HEY YA'LL the 2009 2955 We just picked up has a 1 1/4 hitch on the back.....!!!!
200 pound limit and a BIG sign that says nopt for towing..

So tomorrow we walk to CW and puy a bike mount for the trip home.

Man is this 10th anniv a nice unit.
But so far the remote control does not work and the two zone a/c is hard to figure out.
But it does have the hitch and its a drop down from the frame and I will try and post a couple of photos to show where it mounts

Hey Doug:
Did it just show up with the hitch on, like it's now standard
or did you order it?

It came with the hitch installed. Its a bolt on so it may be able to be mounted to other units.

Checked with CW and they did not have a bike rack with the small mount so I need to do some research to find one.

No..I didn't get a name. I just called Customer Services and they checked with the warranty guy
who knew they were doing it.
And Doug's 2009, 2955 just showed up with one!!
Doug, I saw 1-1/4" receiver bike racks at PPL and in one of those thick 2008 dealers parts books.

Harry,

This is Robin (Dougs' "other half"), thanks for the information! However, neither of us recognize the acronym "PPL" could you please "translate?"

Thanks again!

Sure Robin:
PPL Motorhomes is a dealer in Houston, Tx where you can buy parts on line.
PPLmotorhomes.com?
They have a pretty comprehensive parts department and
on many items they have very competitive pricing and often free shipping.

I've had a hitch/bicycle rack on the back of two different Montanas ... although the bar is right in font of the license plate, you can easily read it. I've never been stopped by local, county, or state police with any concerns about the hitch/plate location. Glad to see Keystone has gotten over their phobia about the hitch issue.
