Locked up

How many people use a king pin lock on your Montana? I have locks on my Reese 5th wheel mount pins in the truck, but was wondering if the king pin lock is important.

I just got one for ours when it gets here. I have a lock on my TT now as it sits next to my house. Never know these days

I never thought that there was a need for a king pin lock. Our rig is either in our RV garage or at a site that has people all around. I think it would be pretty obvious that something is not right if someone hooked up and pulled a 5th wheel out without detaching all of the connections and bringing the slides in. I'm sure others have different experiences.

Have never used a king pin lock. My Reese Elite hitch, like some others, the pull handle is geared to the wrap around latch jaw and pinned. So it is not going to come loose inadvertently or accidentally.

There have been claims of some idiot pulling the hitch release lever while they were parked some where. But we never leave the Monte unattended at any rest area, service station, or other stop.

I use this one. We leave ours setup on another property we own.

I guess there is a bit of confusion to your question about a lock. If you are talking about a lock on the kingpin itself ... yes I do put a lock on it while the fiver sits unattended in my RV port. It's too easy for someone to back up and drive off with it just like can be done with equipment trailers.

If you are talking about a lock on the handle of your fifth wheel hitch ... then no ... I just use the safety pin in the handle of my Curt.

We also always have a lock on on our kingpin when the trailer is unhooked from our truck. Always nice to have that little extra security.

I used to put a lynch pin in the handle and the locking handles that keep the hitch secured to the truck (Ford factory installed puck system). I pulled into a rest stop once and found that one of the lynch pins that secure the hitch to the truck came out during travel and the handles on one side of the hitch were coming undone. Now I put padlocks to replace all three lynch pins on my unit. I just don't trust the pins anymore with the vibration of highway travel. Having said that I think he was asking about the kingpin.

I don't see a need. Rarely lock anything on the trailer or the truck. Locks only keep honest people honest - if someone really wants it they will take it.

Oops! My little brain locked (pun intended) on locking the hitch to the pin. Yes I do use a pin lock on mine, only when in storage even though it is fenced, gated, attendant on site, and there is no history of any RVs stolen. I think mine is the only one.

I have a king pin lock but rarely use it. IF I have to drop the fiver somewhere in an emergency and leave it for a time then I definately will use it.

I lock the kingpin when in storage lot. I also lock the handle on the hitch. I have heard of people pulling the handle while parked at a restaurant or somewhere and then when you go to leave as soon as you step on the gas your trailer falls off the hitch.

I use one when setup for our Winter stay in Florida, not so much for security as to prevent getting grease from the pin onto our clothes as we park our bikes under the front.
Yes I use a lube plate, but you still need grease on the pin where the hitch jaws grab.

Just recently, we have started using one for ours at home. Joy has me now lock both the boat trailer and the 5r. Might slow someone down and cause a big ruckus when I light them up.

We do keep a pad lock on the release handle mainly so I will know were the lock is.
