Montana Washing Machine Plumbing

I will be looking at Montana Trailers at the Quartzsite RV Show in about a month and the "Salesforce" has not shown up yet, but I have a question about the Washing Machine waste water plumbing. Does the waste water go into the gray tank or does it drain into the main outfall drain pipe in the Montana's?

Some drain into the grey tank, some drain directly to the sewer outlet, and some drain to the black tank. No rhyme or reason as to why. You will need to check your own to see.

It has Been found to be into the main waste, into shower grey, into black tank in spite of what the attached label by the washer drain says. Up to the owner to determine where it actually drains.

Ours goes into the gray tank upstairs. Easy enough to figure out, just run a hose to the water outlet for washer and start pulling dump valves until you hit paydirt.

My 2019 Montana drains into the forward gray water tank.
One thing to watch for is to make sure that before delivery they wrench tighten your washer water connection-- mine were not even finger tight and leaked high pressure water out the bottom of the sheet metal in the front of the trailer. You cannot access these connections with the dryer on top in place. My wife and I are in our sixties, and we had to unscrew and lift out the dryer, tighten the water connectionsin the far left back, then reconnect the dryer exhaust connection (very constricted). Also, every connection on my undersink drains in the trailer were looser than finger tight and also leaked everywhere on our first trip.

Beware!

My 2014 3900FB (Front Bath 5th wheel) has 2 gray & 2 black tanks, one of each for downstairs (kitchen & powder room) and one each for upstairs (full bath including w/d). I leave the front gray tank open so the shower & washer drain direct.

2005 Montana 3400RL. Our washing machine drain is connected to the Black Water Tank VENT! This was a stupid thing Montana did for a few years because the vent was right behind the washing machine and it was convenient. We have to dump the black water tank and leave the gate valve open when running the washing machine! Otherwise waste water from the washing machine spits back out of the drain pipe. I called Montana years ago and they confirmed this - DUMB!!!

We have a 2018 3913FB and found out the hard way! (Major black tank over-flow) Our washer & the half bath vanity both drain to the black tank.
Keystone routed the washer waste line to the easiest, nearest tank which was the black.
It's normal operation to keep the black tank valve closed for the reasons we all know.
This means draining & flushing the blk tank, washing clothes then closing tank & partial filling + chemicals each time you want to do laundry. A pain specially if you are full timing!
I'm in the process of rerouting the washer so that it ties into the 3" line outside so that it does not drain into any tank.
Good Luck!

Ours does not drain into either tank it goes directly into the main drain and if the drain is not hooked up to the campground sewer and you have a cap on the end of the main drain, the washer discharge water will eventrually back up the washer stand pipe and out onto the floor. a mess! our W&D are stackable and were installed by CW when we purchased the Montana. We were not advised of this during our walk through. We had a mess the first time we did a load. I did not realize what was causing it and so I removed the W&D from the closet to check things out and clean up. Lo and behold, there on the side wall, well hidden from view by the units when then are normally operating is a large warning sticker which said that you should not run the washer unless connected to a sewer line... not much help when you are unable to see it!!!

Mine drains into the kitchen gray tank. Never had a problem no backups just use it, keep track of the levels and drain. Pretty easy really...

Ours has a sticker that says dumps straight in to the pipe and the cap must be removed but looking behind the the basement wall it goes straight into the grey tank. Go figure.

Washing machine plumbing

Just installed a washing machine in my 2019 3855br. Wondering how the plumbing might be setup in this unit without doing further investigation.

It is my understanding that the washer drain pipe is sometimes piped to the gray tank - and sometimes piped to the black tank. It turned out that my washer was piped to the black tank. The only way to find out is to try it. I waited until the washer was installed - but I suppose you could drag a water hose inside and see which tank fills up.

I would suggest you investigate/verify. Having followed this forum for about 15 years I have learned Montana has no standard when plumbing the drains for washing machines.

Our 2010 Montana 2955RL, the washer drained directly into the main dump drain, didn't go into any holding tank, so it could only be used when connected to sewer.

Mine is plumbed into the grey tank for the bathroom. I drained all my tanks completely and then ran the washing machine. Then I pulled each valve, one at a time. Found out it goes to the bathroom grey tank.

Works out OK for me, because my black and grey, both exit the same port. I can attach a Flush King type of valve and easily back flush the grey tank into the black. I do this ... always ... to help rinse out my black tank better. With the added washing machine water, it give me more back flush water. And, my black tank gets laundry soap pumped into it this way.

Works for me.

FYI ... I also tested how much water my washing machine actually uses by catching the water at the dump valve when the tank was completely empty. I used a 5 gallon bucket for consistent measurement and found it, mine takes a little more than 8 gallons of water from start to finish.

Also, to do the winterizing with RV antifreeze, it took 3/4 of a jug. More than I expected, but I followed the instructions for the washing machine (Splendide stackable) to the letter. I'm glad I had 4 gallons. I ended up using 3 of them to winterize. Normally it takes slightly less than two. But with the washing machine it took almost 3. So, the extra got dumped down the drains.
