TPMS

I picked up the new camper last week, Montana 381th. With 6 tires on the RV I thought it would be a good idea to install a TPMS to monitor tire pressure/temperature. Left town for the 300 mile trip home. Shortly down the road I got a low pressure alarm from one of the valve stems. The tires were to have been inflated to 80psi cold but one of the tires was actually at 61psi. I found a place a short distance down the road to add air to the tire, while on the road with the low tire pressure I was able to monitor the tire pressure and temperature. The temperature of the tire did not climb so I felt it was safe to continue to the stop for air. Additionally, the last 90 miles on the road I had a pretty good cross wind. It was interesting to see the downwind side of the RV had tire pressures 8 to 10 degrees F higher than the wind side of the RV. The trip home assured me it was worth while to get the TPMS for the RV!

Welcome to the smart and educated club of RV owners. Now, make sure you have a good set of tires and not the china bombs Keystone installs on new trailers. Lots of threads covering that on this forum.

I recommend you start a written log on the tires, include the date installed, location on the RV (right, left, front, back, spare). Why?? On our Monty, we travel about 4000 miles each summer and in storage the other 8-9 months. Sitting still IMO really does damage to the tires--yes I cover mine also. My guide is NO tires on the RV that are over 3 years old. Sure reduces tire failures and gives me piece of mind. I still have Coach Net roadside service, carry a 140psi air compressor, 12 ton hydralic jack, & torque wrenches.

Was the downwind side also the sunny side?

Back in around 2011 we purchased our first ever RV (used Montana). A short time later I joined this forum and soon learned about the value of a TPMS. Even though I have had 3 different RVs since that time I am still using part of that first system (TST).

I actually consider it the #1 piece of safety equipment for an RV.

Those OEM tires may be okay while the new RV is unloaded. Problems can start when you are loaded up and out west on a trip and it is 90 degrees out. You may want to weigh your rig fully loaded and look into G rated tires or higher.
