Wyoming Roads

Hi everyone. We have not posted for a long time and now we need some help. We are in Pahrump, NV and this summer need to go to SD to renew our DLs. Ed wants to stay on interstates going there so we can get there quick, take care of business and get out of SD before the motorcycle thing. We plan to take I15 to I80 then I25 to I90 and into Spearfish, SD. Our mapping program says to take 287 near Rawlins then the 220 to Casper where we would hook up to I25. So we need to know how the 287 and 220 are to travel remembering we are towing a 3400. We plan on spending the rest of the summer roaming around Utah and Wyoming.
Thank you for any help you can give us.
Happy trails..........................

I did both of those roads about 18 months ago. They are very good roads and as long as two lane doesn't bother you, you will have absolutely no problems.

The stretch of 220 from the 287 junction to casper follows the old Oregon Trail and there are many pullouts and historic sites to visit. Some nice secluded BLM campsites around the Atlantic City Wy area.

I will be on both of those roads in August. I have taken them many times in the last several years. They are both good 2 lane roads with speed limits to 65 MPH. You will see the real Wyoming.
While you are in Wyoming plan a stay in Dubois. About 10 miles north of Dubois see the Union Pass rd. It is the only road through the Wind River Range. I think it is the prettiest place in the state. It will take you to about 9800 feet. You can see deer, moose, elk and antelope up there. There are a lot of small streams to fish and a lot of lakes to fish or to just enjoy. About half way up there is a nice restaurant the Saw Mill. The locals drive from Dubious to it. Do a Google search for The Sawmill at Dubois.
I will see you about the second week of August on Union Pass or the Shirley Basin. If you are on Union Pass ans see a Montana it will be mine, Stop and say Hi.

Thanks, Lynwood, for the info. We will probably have to pass on your suggestion for a good eat. We try to stay under 6,000 ft because Ed has altitude intolerance and I have been advised to stay "low" because of heart problems.
Happy trails....................

Sue I got bad news for you, a lot of places in Wyoming are over 6000 feet. Laramie is 7200 feet, Cheyenne 6600 feet, Sinclair 7100 feet, Rawlings 6800 feet and I 80 goes up to 8800 feet. So please be careful.

Sue and Ed,
Good to see you on the MOC. Hope all is going well. As Lynwood has pointed out.... Much of WY and surrounding area is 6000 feet or higher. Take care and enjoy. Dennis and Mary Kay

I travel that stretch all the time. You should have no issues. WyDot added some additional passing lanes on 220, and there is a nice rest area at Independence Rock.

You will encounter some road construction as you near Casper on 220, as WyDot is in the process of making 220 through the narrows a 4-lane.

We made the trek this summer for the same reason, but different route starting from North Carolina. Farther North we got, rougher some of the roads were, I assume because of winter plowing. But that was about it.

Thanks everyone. I knew the MOC would help us out. We will be okay with the elevations, I check each place we stay as it is only when we are in one place for any length that is high that there is a problem. We have been in southern Wyoming and did okay. Ed does okay unless we go from low to high quickly. The nice thing is when it is bothering him, we can always stop for a day or so until he adjusts. That is how we did it several years ago starting in AZ headed for CO but we finally made it.
Again thanks for the info.
Happy Trails...................

Enjoy Wyoming. Its not a place I would like to live but it is the place I love to visit. I love the open spaces 50 miles from nothing.

Don't forget Cody WY and of course the rodeo's chuck wagon dinner and just one of the greatest places on the map. Ponderosa CG is right in town, close to everything and they cater to your every need. They sell tickets to all of the attractions. Oh yea, one more thing while there, Go to the Buffallo Bill Museum, and plan a lot of time as its huge!! Most of all have fun out there, love WY!!!
