Step Re-Call 15-224

This is a recall on the Quad Step made by Hickory Springs. I called today, my quad step has the top rivet all but pulled out.

Guess what, mine is NOT included in the recall. So I filed another report @ NHTSA and got a phone call in about 30 minutes.

My step is CLEARLY a Hickory Springs step. But to be told mine is not involved, CLEARLY ****** ME OFF.

Please call Keystone and see if your's is involved and if not and your rivet is pulling out, file a complaint.

The NHTSA Recall # is 15V102000 Keystone # is 15-224

yep a couple of my rivets started popping out on mine so I just put step bolts in their place and now WAY better than new and also I bought $15.00 Adjustable step supports(a little lighter than Cinder blocks under the last step.....problem solved

Mine broke at the second step up, wife nearly broke her neck when coming down them. Keystone said I am NOT covered! I had to put a bolt in it to hold it together. Have new steps ordered through my extended warranty.

Would be nice to know just exactly which models & years ARE covered under this re-call! (If any!)

It is not a recall in the sense that you get replacement steps. All the fix does is replace the rivets with "fasteners". Since we had one break and the dealer replaced the rivet with a bolt, I will just carry a couple of bolts and if I get energetic, replace the rivets before they fail. I would assume that the replacement "fasteners" are most likely bolts anyway. It would cost me more in fuel to get to a dealer than the replacement bolts will cost.

A entry step that could fail and cause a broken hip or broken arm. I DO NOT consider that a minor problem.

Glad I have lippert steps... If your rivets are failing that easy, maybe you should think about replacing them all with bolts at the same time or ordering some lippert steps. Think you are probably more valuable in a healthy state than paying for major damage to the body OR even killing yourself. John

Wow must be my lucky week, my Thetford toilet has not crapped out and I have Lippert Quad steps. Made in America "right".

Mine have a small sticker on them with a little smiley face, indicates the batch number, lists it as a 8" Quad step and a big QC beside which is printed "passed". Oh just one more thing on this little sticker, it also says "made in India".

It does have the much larger Lippert sticker as well.

I think what was meant, it is a minor problem to fix, and now that you are aware, it should still remain a minor problem , and fixed. Instead of letting it turn into a major problem like a broken hip or arm.

Everyone else pay close attention to the pivot arm’s close to the main rivet we had ours break into about ¾ of an inch from the rivet and had to get a mobile welder come out to weld it back together.

Seven years with the old rig and had two of the rivet break and replaced with bolts but never had any of the base metal break/snap like this.

I have Lippert Quad steps

Bill, Please submit a complaint to http://www.safercar.gov/

Your brand of steps are not under the Hickory Springs recall.

I have called Keystone twice and our unit is still not on the recall list even though our rig falls within the manufacturers date. I will give them one more time then will be calling NHTSA....

Les, Go to this link. It shows the vin ranges of the 13-15 models involved. My vin was NOT flagged, thus customer service said mine was not covered when it was. Look at the last 8 of your vin and then match to the listing for '15 Montana. If you find it is, call back and INSIST on talking to a manager, they have a lot of new folks that do not know how to work the computers.

I have the Hickory Springs steps and ours broke at the rivet between the second and third steps just as the recall notice states and Keystone keeps saying we are NOT in the recall.

I contacted our extended warranty company and they are replacing the entire steps for us. Guess they can fight with Keystone over it.

The top step rivet on our steps are really bent and as I was investigating the stress on the rivet I found that the bottom support at the front of the mounting bracket was cracked on both sides. Wife and I are not small but well under 200lbs so should not be a problem with weight or excessive stress with normal use. I took it to camping world today and they will "try" to get my extended warrenty to replace the steps. Like I told the technician at cw even though the steps needed the recall repair made, the cracking of the support frame is really a major problem which will require full replacement. I was in hopes I could upgrade the steps and pay the difference between the standard ones but they said that the warranty would not allow for upgrading the steps even if I pay the difference

I called the feds last Wednesday after receiving the blow-off from Keystone. The Keystone kid really didn't seem to have much of an idea what I was talking about. Got a call from the feds on Friday morning. He couldn't believe Keystone was taking the position they are, our VIN is just missing the recall range. He believes the range is completely subjective. Says he expects to make his recommendations for an expanded recall range. I'll keep everyone posted.

Got my call yesterday from Jamie Salazar at Keystone, this after calling the NHTSA last week. Jamie advised that I am now approved for the steps fix. As I thought, he indicated that their preliminary release of VIN numbers is just that, a start. Unfortunately, I don't think they expand the range of recalls until the complaints from NHTSA start coming in. Does anyone know yet what the actual fix is?
