Frightening Event

Travelling home from Texas with a couple of friends and they discovered, after having travelled 2000 miles south and 1000 miles back north that they had not put the pins in the proper spot when they re-installed their hitch. They were pulling a 37' Fifth wheel....the only thing that kept the RV hooked up was the heavy hitch weight of their RV....someone was looking out for them and everyone else on the highway!!

Wow!! That is scary. If the pins were not in the proper spot where were they?? I'm not sure there would be any place to put the pins other than the proper spot on my hitch??

There were a number of openings along the plates. The owner unknowingly put them in the wrong openings and thought the hitch was fastened in....wrong!!

Lets see item #63 for checklist.

Verify pins properly installed in 5th wheel hitch. Add locking pins to budget for future use.

I think I will move this check-list item up into the pre-trip section - too important to overlook even before hooking up.

I can see how this could happen. On my SuperGlide, there are holes on the attachment rails that line up with nothing (at least they line up with nothing on my truck) and holes that line up with the pegs that are affixed to the bed rails. If you pull the pins from the holes that align with the pegs, the entire hitch can be lifted and removed. If you are not paying attention, it would be easy to replace the hitch and put the pins in the wrong holes.

Things that make you go "BRRRRRR" and then shudder!

Hi Bill,

I can only imagine the reaciton of the person on discovering that!

I take it from your post that they must have come all way south like that, and then half way back. Scary, but I too can understand how it can happen, because I once did put one pin in the wrong hole, fortunately I discovered it before towing the trailer.

My friend did something similar, this past January he put his hitch in the truck in the dark and then hooked up to his 5th wheel. When he pulled forward to test that the hitch was locked, the hitch came out of the truck and was just hanging on his king pin. He was sort of confused at this point and thought the hitch pulled out the trucks bed. When he checked all out he realized he put the locking pins in rail slots that did not match up to hitches anchor points. Another thing to re-check when hooking up!

Sorry, been away!! You're all right it was the rail slots that he put all four pins. Consequently, nothing holding the hitch to the truck. Travelled over 3000 miles that way. I'm glad to see that others may have had a similiar scare. I don't think the fellow travelling with us has been able to calm down yet and I don't blame him. Something else to put on the check list especially if you remove your hitch frequently as I do!!
