Removing the glue!

I am in the process of removing the peeling decals from my Monty (razor scraper). Does anyone know a good way to remove the glue after the decals are off? Thanks!

Cheap lacquer thinner. GooGone may work but slowly.

3M Adhesive Remover is the best, acetone is second.

Hi

X2 for c214dick

The vinyl sign or vehicle wrap companies sell it or a comparable product by the gallon. It is costly but the results are immediate.

3M is also available at Walmart and Auto Parts supply stores. Comes in a spray can. Spray on and scrape off. I used a plastic scraper at first and switched to a razor type as it left the surface much cleaner. No need to apply much pressure as the glue will come right off and just do a small section at a time. I replaced about 75% of my decals and wish I used the 3M at the beginning. Goo Gone never worked for me.

Tried a couple Walmarts in Tucson to no avail.
Got one quart from a Fastenal, also Tucson.
Finally ordered 2 qt. from Amazon and rec'd two days later in Tucson

http://www.amazon.com/3M-General-Pur...+remover+08984

It still does take some effort. I remove the remaining decal with a heat gun, a plastic scraper held in vise grips [gun is darn hot]. Once the remaining decal is gone then I use a rag or heavy paper towel and dose it with the 3M to soak the adhesive. Quick work with the plastic scraper will get the bulk or it. Then a light coat of wax which highlights what I missed and then another wiping with the 3M got almost all of it other than a few tiny spots.

I quit using the steel razor scraper as too often it dug. Yes, it was cleaner as it would really cut but the digging bugged me. I may try it again as my technique has improved , I think.

Wear gloves as the 3M is pretty hard on the hands. Protect yourself from the 3M fumes too. Either work with the wind at your back or use a proper respirator or you will get a heck of a snootfull.

This is what we use in our sign shop:

http://www.amazon.com/REMOVER-Adhesi...remover+gallon

If you can find a sign supply company like Advance Plastics in our area, it about $45 - $50 gallon.

Be careful of the metal that Keystone used below the floor level the glue remover will remove the paint on some of it.

Speaking of heat guns ... there is an art to getting the distance and length of preheat time down before you start pulling at the stickers. The big decals like the mountain scenes are tuff no matter how you go at it, but the narrower ones can be made to peel right off with some practice. Once started, pull the sticker almost back over itself, heat and pull. If the sticker is stretching alot and tearing in two, you've heated it too much and will end up with a bunch of small pieces that you end up digging away with your finger nails or a plastic scraper. I never had success with any kind of a razor as you tend to remove more than the sticker ... so quicker puts one farther behind.

I used a heat gun on my side decals on old Montana. I don't think there was any glue left. But I also seem to remember using Acetone on something... You will probably have the 'shadow' left that won't come off, tho.

I've been removing the paper from some old Lexan using lacker thiner. This is not much different then removing your decals. If it sets too long it leaves tiny hair line cracks that would not be visible on your fiberglass cap. It is near impossible to remove the paper without getting the crakes and I don't know if they would do any harm or if your cap would get them to.

I cannot remember what I used to use to remove masking paper from Lexan or Plexiglass [30+ yrs ago] but it was not Laquer thinner as it will attack the plastic.

Contact GE for their recommendation or Rohm and Hass. They have suggested mixtures and there are masking paper removers which will not attack the plastic.

There is an aerosol adhesive remover called OOPS! I got it at Walmart and it works great. Won't damage the paint. I once bought a trophy horse trailer that was covered with sponsor graphics. It took me forever to get them off, but the OOPS! removed the adhesive that was left behind when I peeled them off. I did follow up with a quick soap and water wash, but the paint was fine.

Do not use Lacquer Thinner, it will damage the paint.
