Brakes smoking and squealing.

My friend has a 2005 dual rear wheel F-350 King Ranch 4x4 diesel. For the last couple months he's been getting smoke from the right rear wheel. We replaced the caliper which was really rusted and appeared to be sticking but the problem persists. The brake pads and rotor seems to be in good shape but the hub gets hot, squeals and smokes. Any ideas what could be wrong?

When you open it up you should be able to see if it's the brakes heating things up...if it's not them it's gotta be a bad bearing...

If you've eliminated the brake being the issue, jack it up, remove the tires, remove the bolts on the end of the wheel hub and the axle will slide right out. You can rent or buy the special hub nut tool from an autoparts store. Once the caliper is out of the way, the rear bearings come out very similar to your bearings on the fiver. If they are all burnt up, replace parts as needed, you should change out the differential oil as well ... synthetic or semi-synthetic would be a good choice. If the end of the spindle is really blue ... ask a local mechanic for direction. Why this guy let this go for a couple of months .... is absolutely baffling ???????

Had the same problem. Had a wheel cylinder blow throwing grease all over the brake shoes and rotor. Fixed and the smoking stopped but still get a burning smell. Still trying to figure that part out.

Jack up both rear wheels so they spin free. Remove the tire/wheel assembly and spin the axle. Does it spin free or is there resistance? Apply the brake a few times and see if it spins free. If there is drag, first open the brake bleeder to check for any remaining pressure that didn't release. If it now spins free you have a master cylinder problem. If it still drags remove the caliper and spin it again. If it spins free now the new caliper or the mounting bolt slides are binding. If it still drags remove the rotor and inspect the e brake shoes and the inner drum they ride on. Also apply the e brake and release it to see if the shoes return to rest position. Lastly spin the axle only and feel for any roughness. Should give you an indication of any bearing problems.
Hope this helps as I have been away for 10 years from my auto repair business.

Thanks everyone for the input. We've been under the truck several times and we are starting to zero in on the parking brakes hanging up. And I figure if one is sticking then the other one should be serviced as well. We'll get into it as soon as time permits. Pulling the rotos off a big truck like this isn't the easiest job for two amatures like us but we'll 'Git-R-don' soon.
