Joshua Tree

Any suggestions for a campground in or near Joshua Tree? We hope to be heading there in mid-April after leaving Organ Pipe.

As always, we appreciate any and all suggestions!

We took a drive through Joshua Tree National Park today and will be moving there tomorrow. There are two campgrounds in the national park that the ranger suggested for the bigger rigs that we have. They are Jumbo Rock and Belle. Still tight (no services) but do able. You have to take up two or three sites to fit in (the sites run together) but that's the only way the bigger rigs will fit. Okay, with the rangers. Camping fee is $10 a day. There is a $15 park pass that you have to purchase and it is good for seven days. We are in Desert Hot Springs right now and just took the truck to check things out. Belle Campground is close to the North Entrance and the town of 29 Palms. Jumbo Rock Campground is farther down the main park road. We entered through West Entrance and the town of Joshua Tree and exited the North Entrance. Literature says cell phone service is sporadic. What I didn't like was literature says generators from 7-9a.m., noon to 2p.m., and 5-7p.m.

Also, if you're not interested in boon docking (not sure if that's what we are going to do either); we checked out a campground in 29 Palms www.29palmsresort.com. It's a PPA park and didn't look to bad.
PPA price is $19.

Some web sites that might help you are Joshua Tree National Park www.nps.gov/jotr/, Joshua Tree (nice town w/fast food) www.joshuatreechamber.org and Twentynine Palms www.29chamber.com

If I can answer any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Don't think we'll have internet while we are there but only plan on staying two or three days and will get back with you as soon as I can.

David and Jo-Anna,

Just an FYI, Easter break will be in early April and Joshua Tree is a very popular spot.

We stayed at 29 Palms resort in March 2006. It is OK but, most of the sites are just paved parking spots. There is also a RV Park in Yucca Valley we stayed in in March 2007 but, it is right on the main highway and noise.

We ended up staying at Black Rock Canyon Campground in the Northwest corner of the park out of Yucca Valley. Supposedly they take only up to 35 feet, but there are a couple of pull throughs where we fit (Site #48). Roads within the campground are tight, but doable if you are careful.

Dry camping for $12 ($6 with senior pass) Flush toliets, water near by and dump station. Lots of Joshua Trees and some hiking trails. Up on a hill so it was cooler than in the main park and very pretty views.
