The only thing I know for sure is that from Colorado Springs to Kentucky, I-70 then I-64 at St. Louis is the most direct route, it doesn't appear that either I-80 or I-40 would be the best options. I don't know about the western part of the route, but I would say if you can get to Denver, the rest would be easy.

Are you in Yosemite now? I am working in Yosemite this summer and we are living in our Montana in Midpines, between Mariposa and Yosemite.

I'd suggest I80 to Nebraska City to pick up I29
I29 south to I435 around Kanssa City to I70
I70 to St Louis and pick up I64
I64 to Louisville, KY
I70 is a toll road from Topeka to Kansas City which can be avoided by taking I80 to Nebraska City.

We did I-64 and 70 going west in April and I-40 coming east from AZ to NC this spring. Both were interesting drives. Had to dodge snows in April crossing the passes in CO. Looks like a toss up from Yosemite to either 80 or 40 from my atlas.

BandJ,
We are living up the road from the KOA. When you arrive we will be getting ready to head out to Washington. I will be working in the Park until the end of Sept. Get intouch when you arrive we would be happy to show you around.

Both I-40 and I-80 are good routes, in my estimation, but I would take I-70 simply because that drive through Colorado is gorgeous. The other two are pretty drives, I-70 through Colorado is far prettier in my opinion.

This is probably the easiest route but I-70 through Colorado is far prettier. Absolutely gorgeous. I've towed it with both a Ford gas V10 and Ford diesel. What a beautiful drive.
Glenn is correct about the toll road from Topeka to Kansas City but it's only about 60 miles and maybe four bucks or so.
If you go I-80 and then south on I-29, I'd recommend taking highway 2 from Lincoln to I-29 near Nebraska City. I think that may be the same route Glenn is suggesting. At Kansas City, take I-435 around the east side of the city, to I-70.
