It may be difficult to convince the tax people that you reside in another state when you own or rent property in their state. Several years ago I took an early pension from a company in Missouri and moved back to Ohio. I was hounded for three years by the Missouri tax department and finally had to send documents to prove that I no longer lived in their state. Also, the state tax laws are constantly changing, as we all know. Currently, you have to live in Ohio for more than six months out of the year to have to pay state income taxes. The law is being changed so that you are required to pay prorated taxes on the actual time that you spend in the state. Sales tax may also be another consideration. There are many instances, particularly mail order or internet purchases or high ticket items, that sales taxes are collected for the state that you claim residency.
