refrigerator recall

Remember the Dometic recall? I had the service done this past Spring. This week my refrigerator failed. The Tech said it leaked all the coolant. I couldn't see it for the recall fix installation to contain the fire that would result from such a leak especially if I had been on propane.

So, if you have been putting of that recall fix, I urge you to make time to get-r-done.

I hope every mile holds for you a smile.

We had our refridge done last week. It only took about 45 min., it was harder getting to the shop than it was getting the unit fixed.

We got a letter from Keystone last week about the Dometic refrigerator recall.

Called a mobile serviceman in the immediate area and had it replaced, took about 30 minutes. We paid $50 for the service call.

After looking at what can catastrophically happen, wish we had fixed it sooner!

Git-R-Done.

Grant and Kathy,

Bullhead. Used a RV repair service called Roadrunner.

There should be a similar service there in Pahrump.

Our refrigerator failed also. I'm in the process of communicating with the government recall people, plus others who may be able to help us. The fix is not a fix. The fix would be to correct the issues with the cooling system. Dometic replaced the failed units until Spring of 08 -- and then began saying no.

Gene, we had the same problem with the coolant leaking out. Ours was at one month after the "fix." I've heard of so many of these subsequent failures that I have to wonder if the "fix" was done incorrectly, causing the leak. The entire cooling unit had to be replaced in ours. Fortunately we were still under warranty.

Steve, I watched the service man add the shield to our fridge. The way he had to push and pull things to get it to fit, I was surprised ours was still cooling. Can't be good for anything to tug on it like that!

To all who have had the "fix" followed by refrigerator failure/coolant unit. I truly hope each and every one of you are able to get your cooling units replaced under warranty or for free from Dometic.

No such luck for us. Refrigerator failed, just like yours -- and we were left on our own. Expensive fix.

Good luck.

Agree with these comments that we are stuck with a catch 22 here, must install (to prevent risk of fire) recall kit and its installation might be inducing an earlier failure date. I believe the little shield that has to be installed on the electric element is aggravating the pocket where it fits into the boiler.

don't think the fix hurries along the failure as our refrig failed 1 month after the 3 year warranty was up and about the same time as we received the recall notice (and before any fix installation). It looks like an obvious design failure that dometic doesn't want to admit. Dometic wouldn't do any thing for us but our extended warranty paid for all but $300 for a new refrig and this time I'm proud to have a norcold built in Sidney, OH.

We haven't had the fix done yet as we have been living in the RV full time and haven't been able to take it in.

I really wish that they had responded to my email about recalls when I first read about problems on the board. I contacted them and they told me that our refrigerator was NOT in the recall. We could have taken the Monty in then without a problem as we weren't living in it full time. I contacted local RV dealers in the Kemah area and I have been told that we have to wait up to 3 to 4 weeks before they could get to us.

Has anyone had Keystone pay for a Teck to do the work at your RV park? Does the fix shorten the life of the Frig? We only run ours on electric, does that make a difference?

Our fridge died before we could have the fix done. But a few of the full-timers living by us had a mobile specialist come out. They were told (by the company who referred the work out) that Keystone would NOT pay for the service call (which was $55.)

Also, we ran ours only on electric unless we experienced a power outage. Fridge still died -- leaked all the coolant.

Maybe someone else will come along with more positive news for you.
Good Luck

Since the refrigerator is a Dometic product, not a Keystone product, I think you'd have to ask Dometic about reimbursement. I can't see Keystone covering this no matter where the work is done. You might give Dometic a call.

Our recall service was done by a local tech who gets reimbursed for "house calls" by Dometic.

Good point, Steve. I mis-spoke myself. Sorry.

No problem, Gail. I didn't mean it as criticism. Just didn't want you to miss out on reimbursement by assuming Keystone would be responsible. Good luck with it. I know how much a pain it is to have to uproot the rig to take it in for service when you live in the thing. We had to do that for the recall (were set up for a month in Santa Fe) and again after it died in Independence, MO a month later. Naturally all the grandkid pictures and other items we only put out/up when there for awhile were out and had to be packed away.

I was told that Dometic would pay a service call if you were sick or had the RV permanently anchored. I was sick at the time, so I called the company that is doing the recall for Dometic. No go; the woman I spoke with was emphatic that they would not pay for a service call.

When we decided to move back to Aransas Pass, I called and scheduled the recall. When I went in to sign the work order, I quizzed them about the service calls. They said Dometic pays them all the time. Guess I didn't hold my mouth right!

It is troubling, but not supprising that the Dometics are continuing to spring leaks and loose the ammonia coolant. After exhausting all efforts to have Dometic repair our just out of warrenty unit that failed, I am in the process of either installing an aftermarket cooling coil assembly - or switching the unit out for a Norcold of the same size. As soon as the weather moderates here in Idaho - the Dometic is coming out of the hole. For an appliance so costly, with a factory admitted flaw, and in the numbers of units in consumers hands, Dometic really dropped the ball on this one. My letter and phone calls and emails all the way to the top of Dometic management have resulted in a resounding denial of customer service beyond warrenty - no exception. Bummer!
