Thetford Toilet 'AGAIN'!

New 2017 3611 with Thetford 42072 and will not hold water! I noticed no water in bowl while loading items from old 3400 traded in. Of course, now have the camper at home. Turned pump on and filled with about a pint of water. It drained in about 10 seconds! The black 'rubber' gasket doesn't appear to be installed evenly. I put some vaseline on the gasket but no luck. But, reading this site, probably a POS Thetford! Wonder if I can get the dealer to replace with Dometic 320 under warranty. Anyone have any luck with this?

It is no doubt a improperly installed gasket take it apart and install it properly. Just one of those Rv things.

Whether or not the dealer will bite on changing it, it is in your best interest to get it changed out. If it decides to fill the bowl when you aren't around, then more issues could arise that make the cost of the unit pale. If you are lucky and it only refuses to hold water and let's smell in or the pedal does the repeat falling off, then not soooo bad. I wanted to put the issue behind me as fast as possible...just like the marathon tires that bit me twice. John

Our OEM one was replaced under warranty when the flush valve literally blew up. The next one wouldn't hold water and I bought seals and changed them out twice (not hard, but not fun). Then I finally got smart and bought a Dometic. Felt like a fool to not have dumped it right at the start, but the posts were just starting back then so I thought I could fix it.

We have friends that have a MH that had a toilet fail while away from their rig, filled the black tank and overflowed into the rig. It caused thousands of dollars to repair, and much inconvenience. The couple hundred dollars, even if just out of pocket is a much better option than trying to make the existing toilet work. I changed ours out after trying to repair it, less than $200, and maybe 15 minutes to install, and have had no problems since. We went with the 310, and are very happy with it.

Well, talked to dealer and they said when new these toilets may not seal properly at first. Said to depress the pedal all the way and slide your foot off and let it snap back. Said do this several times. I did this about a dozen times and so far holding water. We will see how long this works!

We have been in the habit of turning the water off at the CG source when leaving our camper for very long. I usually forget to turn back on and DW usually tries to use the toilet as soon as we get back! She is a good reminder for me to turn water back on. Also purchased two leak detectors to place beside the toilet to alert us if a leak occurs during the night.

I just changed to toilet in our Monty I felt it was not worth the effort to bring it in for repair now we have a new Dometic 320 in bone with a sprayer is was $ 208.99 shipped to the house from PPL RV Parts. 10 minutes to change. The New toilet is higher. and best of all it holds water (No Odors)

In answer to your warranty question, doubt any dealer would replace one brand with another under warranty. Tweety has free shipping on the dometics.

Do yourself a big favor and change it out to a Dometic 310 or 320. We changed out to a 320 because of the elongated bowl (takes very little more room) and are very happy we did. We ordered from PPL with the sprayer for just under $200 and it was a 15 minute self-install.

Interesting. I noticed during our PDI that the toilet wouldn't hold a bowl of water more than 40 seconds. I made them replace it, which delayed me camping for another week waiting for it to come in.
The new one seems to be OK, but I'll keep an eye on it after reading these posts.

I have been in touch with Thetford with a similar problem. Even had the dealer (under warranty) replace the gasket but the toilet still leaked. By now I was 2,000 miles from my dealership. However, I found a solution for my toilet. If I press the foot lever to the floor and slide my foot off the lever it will snap back and seal. Now I don't know it this has happened instantly or over time but it is working. I haven't been in touch with Thetford since I started doing this so I don't know what they might say about it PS if I raise the lever slowly, the toilet still does not seal.

Hi all We have a Thetford model 42072 in our 2016 Montana 3790RD Legacy. Problem with the seal holding water from day one. Thetford sent no charge replacement gasket kits twice. still a problem. Dealer said to let the pedal "snap" shut and held water ok. But Thetford said not to let it snap as it will damage the pedal mechanism. They are sending me a new lower base for the unit. Let you know how that works out.. Maybe less aggravating to go to a dometic as others have. Also having major problem with the Norcold (Thetford) refrigerator. model 2118 4 door 18 cu foot. Left door had to be replaced as it was dragging on the bottom lip. Then right door had to be adjusted The the jamb piece on the left door which runs from top to bottom would go into place on its own had to pull it to 90 degrees by hand. Finally got fridge temp to go below 46 degree to about 35-40 which was not too bad but the lower shelf is about 10 degrees higher than the top shelf. Dealer says that ok but I know its not he says he wont call Norcold as they probably wont do anything anyway. God if I provided service like that when I would have been embarassed and flogged. Thats a Canadian term meaning beaten with a large whip....
He also said the mattress manufacturer probably wouldnt do anything about the very hard spot in the full length of the mattress. Guess we should realize that you dont get much for $80,000.00 these days

Arizonacouple, thanks for the tip. Tried it and it seemed to have taken care of the problem with mine.

We also have the Thetford 42072 with same issue. 2 new seal kits replaced and still water passes. Dealer says to let the pedal snap shut, Thetford says that letting it snap could damage the pedal assemble. Laura of Thetford is sending us a lower base to seem if that helps. Will let you know how that works. Prevously had a Montana 3400RL and pedal spring assembly came apart and could not get it back into place. Dealt the 3400 on the 3790 and thought all out problems would be over LOL
